Batch Provisioning

Line activation, dynamic registration, batch creation, and MES integration

1. What this covers

Batch provisioning creates cloud identities and preloaded configuration for a large number of devices on the line or in the warehouse, and shortens the activation cycle from the factory to a device that is ready to use. The SimtoLink Device Management Platform supports CSV and Excel import, API batch creation, and dynamic registration, so different line processes can activate devices their own way.

The platform already runs line activation for smart-hardware makers, including batch creation at a daily output of tens of thousands of units. One API call creates on the order of a thousand devices, as an asynchronous task with a progress query, so the line does not wait.

2. Core capabilities

Dynamic registration

One secret per product type plus dynamic registration: the line scans a unique identifier (MAC, IMEI, or SN) and calls the API to register. No pre-burn is required. A line tool can still write ProductKey and DeviceSecret into firmware or a secure element (SE), so the device connects on first power-on.

How batches are created

CSV or Excel import: fill unique identifiers from the template and upload them. API batch creation: one request handles on the order of a thousand devices, as an asynchronous task with a progress query. You can set the device’s initial tags, groups, and thing model defaults so lines with different products stay distinct.

MES and ERP integration

The batch-creation API connects to MES (manufacturing execution) and ERP. When a device is created it can carry the production batch and quality-inspection data, so production records and device identity stay linked for quality traceability and after-sales.

3. The provisioning path

Scan the identifier→Create the batch→Burn credentials→First power-on→Connect to the platform

4. How the activation methods compare

Each provisioning method fits a different line process.

MethodTypical pathWhere it fits
Dynamic registrationScan the SN, register by API, no burnOne secret per product type, when the line has no burn step
Pre-burnCreate by API, burn PK/DS, write to the SEOne secret per device, high-security cases
CSV importFill Excel, upload the batch, create asynchronouslyPrepared offline, then imported in bulk
MES linkScan on the line, MES calls the API, attach the batchProduction traceability and a closed quality loop

5. Where teams use it

  • Smart meters: the meter line scans IMEI or SN, creates devices in batch, and attaches the production batch for after-sales and quality traceability.
  • In-vehicle terminals: the T-Box line burns ProductKey and DeviceSecret into the secure element, and the device connects on first power-on.
  • Consumer electronics: the smart-hardware line uses dynamic registration or a CSV import, depending on the output the shift needs.

6. What the program is worth

Batch provisioning on the SimtoLink Device Management Platform is built for fast activation on the line. Several intake paths — CSV import, API batch, and dynamic registration — can be chosen to fit the process. Asynchronous runs create on the order of a thousand devices at a time, with progress you can query, so the line is not blocked. Line integration connects MES and ERP, linking production data to device identity. Quality traceability looks a device up by its unique identifier for after-sales and compliance audit.

The platform includes provisioning API documentation and line-integration samples. Contact SimtoLink for a batch-provisioning design or help wiring it into the line.

7. How to roll it out

Start by fixing the line process: whether credentials must be burned in advance, and whether MES is in the loop. One secret per product type with dynamic registration drops the burn step and simplifies the line. One secret per device needs a line tool that writes the credential into the device. Batch creation should use the asynchronous API so the line is not waiting on a synchronous call, with progress queries and retry on failure. When MES is connected, device creation can carry the production batch and the inspection result for quality traceability. SimtoLink can design the line integration, run a proof of concept, and support go-live.
