Configuration Push

Thing model properties, device shadow, batch push, and version rollback

Configuration push: change device parameters remotely

Once a device is online, sampling interval, report frequency, and operating mode still need to change. Doing that on site, device by device, is expensive. Configuration push on the SimtoLink Device Management Platform sends JSON through a thing model property or a custom topic. An online device applies it immediately. An offline device receives the cached payload when it comes back, so the configuration converges.

Configuration push complements OTA. OTA updates firmware. Configuration push changes runtime parameters. Together they cover remote operations. The platform already pushes configuration for smart-home and industrial devices, including remote parameter changes across tens of millions of devices.

How a push is sent

Single device: The platform pushes to one named device. Use it for debugging or a one-off change. The call can wait for the device response.

Batch: Filter devices by group or tag, then push the same configuration once. The task runs asynchronously and progress can be queried. This is the path for a large parameter change.

Shadow: Write the desired configuration into the device shadow. The device pulls and applies it on the next report. That suits an offline device and keeps the configuration from being lost.

Versions and rollback

Each push can create a configuration version, and the platform can roll back to an earlier one. An effective-time window keeps the push off peak hours. The platform provides a configuration-push API and device-side integration samples for business systems.

What the configuration path adds

Configuration push checks values against the thing model, so an invalid payload does not put the device into a bad state. SimtoLink can help design the push and integrate the device. Contact SimtoLink for a configuration-push design on the Device Management Platform.

Where teams use it

In smart agriculture, the platform changes sensor sampling interval and report frequency remotely, so the monitoring plan can follow the crop stage. On an industrial gateway, it can change Modbus slave addresses, baud rates, and related parameters in a batch, with no site visit.

Record a version for a critical configuration change so the fault can be traced later. Common payloads can be saved as templates and pushed to a new device in one step. SimtoLink can help design the thing model and the rules for each configuration item.

Single device, batch, and shadow

The platform supports three push modes. A single-device push is for debugging or a one-off change. A batch push selects devices by group or tag and sends once. The shadow holds the desired configuration until an offline device comes online and pulls it. Configuration push and OTA cover different parts of remote operations.

Smart-home and industrial fleets already run on this path. SimtoLink can design the configuration scheme, set up the thing model, and support integration on the device.

What configuration push covers

After a device is online, sampling interval, report frequency, and operating mode still move. The platform pushes JSON through a thing model property or a custom topic. An online device applies it at once. An offline device receives the cached payload when it reconnects. The three modes are a named device, a batch filtered by group or tag, and the device shadow, which stores the desired configuration for the device to pull on its next report. Each push can create a version, with rollback to an earlier version, and an effective-time window can be set.

The platform ships a configuration-push API and device-side samples. SimtoLink can design the push and support device integration. Contact SimtoLink for a configuration-push design and hands-on support.

OTA replaces firmware. Configuration push changes runtime parameters. The two together are remote operations on the SimtoLink Device Management Platform, alongside OTA. The same path already serves smart-home and industrial devices, including parameter changes across tens of millions of devices. A check against the thing model keeps an invalid configuration from disturbing the device. SimtoLink can help write that thing model and the rules for each configuration item.
