1. Why it exists
Laws in many countries require personal information, important data, and operators of critical information infrastructure to store data in-country and to assess anything that leaves. In IoT, telemetry, logs, images, and diagnostic packages can hold a person’s location, habits, and a company’s process parameters at the same time. The company has to be able to say which region data lands in by default, which processing steps might cross a border, and who may reach it remotely. The SimtoLink Device Management Platform can be deployed across regions and availability zones. A tenant is bound to a primary data center and a disaster-recovery layout. Cross-region asynchronous replication is refused unless an approved policy explicitly allows it and records why.
2. Core capabilities
Regional instances
A tenant is bound to a primary site and a disaster-recovery layout. Cross-region asynchronous replication is refused by default, so the data stays where the customer said it should.
Data classification
Separate personal identifiers, precise location, business secrets, and machine telemetry, and set the storage region and encryption level from sensitivity.
Key boundary, BYOK
The customer’s own key stays in an in-country KMS or HSM. The platform holds only a wrapping key and cannot decrypt business data on its own.
3. How a residency policy is applied
4. Platform capability matrix
| Capability | What it does |
|---|---|
| Regional instance isolation | A tenant is bound to a primary and a disaster-recovery region. Cross-region copy needs an approved policy that records the purpose |
| Data classification | Classes cover personal identifiers, location, images, secrets, and telemetry, each with a storage region and a retention period |
| BYOK / keys stay in-country | Key material stays in an in-country KMS or HSM, in line with encryption governance |
| Remote operations access | Cross-border troubleshooting uses a ticket-approved time window, with session recording, two-person review, and an audit entry |
| Data map | Shows where each data domain sits, its backup copies, and the access path, and can be exported for audit |
5. Classification and sensitivity tiers
Split data into personal identifiers, precise location, identifiable images, business secrets, and machine-only telemetry. For each class, set the storage region, encryption level, retention period, and who may access it. Get the class wrong and you either send everything abroad in one cut, or you block data that is allowed to leave.
6. The key boundary and BYOK
Customers can bring their own key (BYOK). The key material stays in an in-country KMS or HSM, following encryption governance. The platform holds only a wrapping key and cannot decrypt business data by itself.
7. Operations and remote access
Cross-border troubleshooting should run inside a time window approved on a ticket, with the session recorded, a second person reviewing, and the record written to the audit trail. Session tokens used with industrial remote sessions should be scoped to a region.
8. How this relates to cross-border transfer
The legal path, contract terms, and exceptions are on cross-border data transfer. Residency says where data sits by default. Cross-border transfer says the conditions under which it may leave.
9. Contracts and suppliers
Put the allowed region list, the sub-processors, and the change-notice mechanism into the DPA and the SLA. Follow the cloud provider’s region roadmap, and check early whether a new region crosses a compliance line.
10. A map you can show an auditor
The console draws a data map: the region of each data domain, backup copies, analytics copies, and the access path, exportable for audit. Cross-check it against geofencing and hot and cold time-series tiers, so cold data is not copied by mistake into a bucket outside the country.
11. Summary
Data residency sits where legal, security, and infrastructure meet, and the product promise has to match the contract. SimtoLink provides tenant binding, a data map, a key boundary, and audit export. Appendix: operating residency after go-live
A residency policy has to survive contact with production. Drill a pre-production or pilot batch that matches live: a connection storm, a disk that fills, certificate rotation, and a cross-region failure, and store the result as an acceptance checklist. Put metrics, alert thresholds, the on-call escalation path, and audit retention into the change process, so a parameter change can be traced and rolled back without relying on one operator’s memory. Each quarter, development, operations, security, and data should check that the metrics still explain the business risk, and attach improvements to tickets and releases. Observability, orchestration, and audit are one asset on the SimtoLink Device Management Platform. The console, the open API, and export stay in service after launch. If you need the design reviewed against an existing ITSM, IAM, data lake, or edge cluster, the SimtoLink solutions team can join and return implementation advice and a risk list.
