1. What it is for, and where it stops
Training models, regulatory filings, and the annual audit often scan the whole history more than once. An online time-series store and an interactive query gateway are built for low-latency point lookups and bounded aggregates, so they are a poor home for a warehouse. The SimtoLink Device Management Platform runs batch export jobs partitioned by hour or by day, with a delay window you can set. Detail rows and aggregates are written as columns — Parquet is the default, ORC is available — into the customer’s own S3, OSS, HDFS, or Azure Data Lake. File metadata carries the schema version, the tenant id, and the export job id, so Spark SQL, Trino, and Paimon can read the files directly.
Batch export and the live Kafka bridge do different jobs. Export is for large backfills and offline models. The bridge is for online risk checks and operations dashboards.
2. Scheduling, watermarks, and fault tolerance
The job engine uses an incremental high watermark so the same rows are not exported twice, and it merges small files before the late-data window closes. A failed segment retries on its own and lands in a dead-letter directory, which raises an alert and a ticket. For business that crosses time zones, declare the partition time zone and the daylight-saving rule, or audit reconciliation will drift.
Partitioned columnar export
Partitioned by hour or by day, written as Parquet or ORC into the customer’s own S3, OSS, or HDFS, with the schema version and the tenant id on the file.
Incremental watermark
An incremental watermark stops the same rows from being exported twice. Small files are merged before the late-data window closes. A failed segment retries on its own and lands in a dead-letter directory.
Lineage in the catalog
Upstream device groups, topics, and the reports that read them are registered in DataHub or Atlas. Lineage JSON is pushed so an auditor can trace the path.
3. Quality verification and reconciliation
Each job writes row count, byte count, null rate, and a quantile summary of key measures, and compares them with data quality monitoring thresholds. An exception blocks the downstream release. A sample check against the online store keeps the export and the serving layer on the same definition.
4. Security, encryption, and access
Turn on server-side encryption with a KMS-held key for object storage. Cross-cloud writes use a least-privilege IAM role and short-lived credentials. Export paths are isolated by tenant prefix so one job cannot overwrite another. Sensitive columns can be masked or hashed before they are written, and the policy is recorded in the audit trail.
5. Lineage and the data catalog
Register upstream device groups, topics, rule versions, and which reports consume the data in the customer’s catalog (DataHub, Atlas, and similar), so the path can be traced. The SimtoLink API can push lineage JSON, so nobody maintains it by hand.
6. Cost and performance
Prefer ZSTD or Snappy, prune columns, and set the sort key from the columns you filter on most, so scans cost less. For a wide table, use a nested structure or split it, so one file does not get too large to parallelize. Tie this to storage tiering so historical partitions move to cold storage on their own.
| Capability | What it does |
|---|---|
| Partitioning | By hour or by day, with a delay window and a declared time zone, so reconciliation does not drift |
| Watermark and fault tolerance | An incremental watermark stops duplicate export. Late data is merged, and a failed segment retries on its own |
| Quality gate | Each job compares row count, bytes, and null rate with the data-quality thresholds before anything is released |
| Encryption and access | Server-side encryption with a KMS-held key. Cross-cloud writes use a least-privilege IAM role |
| Lineage registration | Automatically push upstream device groups and downstream report reference relationships to the data catalog |
7. Compliance and cross-border transfer
If data leaves the country, assess the cross-border transfer path, and mask it in-country before copying to a bucket abroad when that is required. The export job itself should record who ran it and the approval number.
8. Summary
A reliable batch export path is how large volumes of OT telemetry enter the IT data lake safely. It is the shared base for AI and for audit. SimtoLink covers scheduling, a quality gate, encryption, and lineage metadata together. See also hot and cold time-series tiers and ad hoc SQL and BI. Appendix: export jobs that stay healthy
Batch export should not stop at a proof of concept. On a pre-production or pilot batch shaped like production, exercise a connection storm, a full disk, certificate rotation, and a cross-region failure, and keep the notes as an acceptance checklist you can repeat. Record metrics, alert thresholds, the on-call path, and audit retention inside change management, so a parameter change is traceable and reversible and does not depend on one person’s experience. Quarterly, development, operations, security, and data should ask if the metrics still explain business risk, and connect each improvement to a ticket and a release. The SimtoLink Device Management Platform treats observability, orchestration, and audit as one asset: the console, the open API, and export keep running as operations tools after launch.
