1. Why teams use it
Protocols on site differ, and baking every one into gateway firmware makes each release slow. Customers still want custom parsing, light AI preprocessing, or a local MES or ERP connection on the edge, and they will not SSH into every box to install it. The SimtoLink Device Management Platform ships a verified containerized function from the cloud image registry to the edge runtime, and it owns the version, the environment variables, and the health check. The image and the config package go through signature checks and a vulnerability scan, in the same spirit as the firmware signing pipeline. An image that is not registered does not run.
A secure image pipeline
An OCI image is signed and scanned before it is sent. An image that is not registered does not run. The bar matches firmware signing.
A resource sandbox
cgroup and namespaces cap CPU, memory, and temporary storage, so one function cannot take the gateway down.
Canary and rollback
Blue-green, rolling, and a canary by device group. If the health check fails, roll back to the previous version and raise an event.
How a function is shipped
| Capability | What it does |
|---|---|
| Image signing | An OCI image reaches the edge runtime only after the signature checks out |
| Sandbox | cgroup and namespaces cap CPU, memory, and temporary storage |
| Cold start | Preload images that are used often into the edge cache, so the first packet is faster |
| Canary release | Blue-green, rolling, and a canary by device group. Roll back automatically on failure |
| Network policy | Deny all outbound by default. Open a domain or a port only when it is on the approved allow list |
2. Quotas and isolation
A function sits inside an edge compute quota: CPU, memory, temporary storage, and GPU time slices. Preloading images that are used often can shorten the cold start and the first packet. The runtime isolates with cgroup and namespaces, so one function cannot take the gateway down.
3. Network security
Outbound is denied by default. A domain, an internal segment, or a port opens only when it is on an approved allow list. Inbound is limited to the platform control plane and a local Unix socket. A sensitive site can add an egress proxy and TLS inspection.
4. Upgrade, rollback, and canary
Blue-green, rolling, and a canary by device group. If the health check fails, roll back to the previous version and raise an event. Tied to the edge node lifecycle, each change approval is recorded.
5. What you can see, and how you debug
Logs use a standard set of fields. Metrics and traces go to Prometheus and OpenTelemetry, so they line up with the central SRE stack. Retries after a crash should be limited and should back off.
6. Tenants and the supply chain
Each tenant has its own image registry and runtime namespace, so tags do not collide and a pull cannot cross a boundary. A third-party ISV function is listed only after a partner security audit.
7. Where the rules DSL still belongs
Keep simple Boolean logic and thresholds in the rules DSL. Move work into a function when it needs a heavy library or a long-running task, so operations does not grow without a reason.
8. Summary
An edge function lets a site innovate without waiting for a hardware revision, and it still needs signatures, quotas, default-deny networking, and observability underneath. SimtoLink provides the secure delivery path and the operations view. Further reading: edge node lifecycle and edge video analytics. Appendix. Running functions after the first deploy
Shipping a function from a demo into a plant still needs three routines. On a pre-release batch that matches production, rehearse a connection storm, a full disk, certificate rotation, and a cross-region fault, and keep the notes as an acceptance checklist. Put cold-start time, crash-retry thresholds, the on-call path, and audit retention into change management, so an image promotion can be traced and rolled back without depending on whoever last approved it. Each quarter, engineering, operations, security, and data should ask whether those signals still explain the risk, and attach the follow-ups to tickets and the release calendar. Console, open API, and export on the SimtoLink Device Management Platform stay in service as operating assets: observable, orchestrable, and auditable. If the runtime has to live next to your ITSM, IAM, data lake, or edge cluster, the SimtoLink solutions team can review the architecture with you and return an implementation note and a risk list.
