1. Scenario Overview
Performance monitoring is the core of observability in IoT operations. Besides live device status, you also need platform-side and device-side metrics such as CPU, memory, network, and message throughput. The performance monitoring module on the SimtoLink Device Management Platform collects connection count, inbound and outbound message rate, API latency, and how often devices report. It supports collection by the second and aggregation by the minute, so time-series analysis can run at more than one grain, and it helps with capacity planning and finding bottlenecks.
The platform already supports performance monitoring for large IoT deployments, including multi-dimensional aggregation, trend charts, and Grafana.
2. Monitoring Metrics
Platform-side metrics
Connection count, inbound and outbound message rate (TPS), storage used, API QPS, and P99 latency. Aggregate by product, region, and other dimensions to find local hotspots and unusual peaks.
Device-side metrics
Performance properties on the thing model that the device reports: CPU usage, memory usage, signal strength (RSSI), report rate, and similar fields, for health monitoring of edge devices.
Time-series storage and query
Performance metrics are stored in a time-series database, so you can query trends over any period. You can set a performance baseline, such as average API latency or message throughput, and an alert fires when the value drifts from it.
3. Monitoring flow
4. Metric categories
Platform-side and device-side metrics fall into these groups:
| Metric domain | Typical metrics | Where it is used |
|---|---|---|
| Platform connections | Online connection count, connect and disconnect rate | Capacity assessment, connection-pool monitoring |
| Message throughput | Inbound and outbound message TPS, message backlog | Message-queue health, traffic-spike detection |
| API performance | QPS, P50/P99 latency, error rate | SLA protection, API performance tuning |
| Device resources | CPU, memory, RSSI, report rate | Edge-device health, weak-network detection |
5. Typical uses
- Capacity planning: historical performance data predicts the resources you will need after the business grows, and supports a scale-out decision.
- Finding bottlenecks: spot a message backlog or a sudden rise in connections, and use that to locate the system bottleneck and the root cause.
- Protecting the SLA: set alert thresholds for API P99 latency, error rate, and similar metrics so the service-level agreement holds.
6. What the solution is worth
Performance monitoring on the SimtoLink Device Management Platform helps an enterprise reach observability. Full-stack monitoring collects platform-side and device-side metrics in one place. Time-series analysis aggregates by the second or the minute so you can look at more than one grain. Performance baselines alert on their own when a value drifts. Open integration lets you export the data or send it to Grafana and other visualization tools, including custom dashboards.
The platform supports performance-monitoring setup, alert-rule design, and capacity assessment. For a performance-monitoring design or a tuning consultation, contact SimtoLink.
7. How to roll it out
Start by listing the key performance indicators, and configure the core ones first: platform-side connection count, message throughput, and API latency. Build the performance baseline from history, and set P99 latency alerts against the business SLA. Device-side metrics need performance properties on the thing model, reported by the device when they are needed. Performance data can feed Grafana so operations can see a custom dashboard.
