Version management

Firmware and configuration traceability · Changelog · Canary release · CI/CD · Targeted OTA

1. What version management covers

Version management traces versions for OTA firmware and for configuration delivery. SimtoLink DMP keeps the metadata on a firmware package: version number, release notes (changelog), which device models it applies to, and dependencies. You can look up a device’s current version and its upgrade history, which is what version traceability and compliance reviews ask for. It is already integrated with OTA and rollback.

2. Version information and metadata

A firmware package carries a version number, a changelog, and a file checksum. Compatibility rules can limit the path, for example allowing an upgrade only from 1.x to 2.x, so a jump across versions does not land on an incompatible image. Configuration delivery has version numbers and rollback targets as well.

3. Release and canary policy

Firmware follows a release flow, with a test version (Beta) and a production version (Release). An OTA task can name the source version and the target version, and push only to devices that match, which is targeted OTA.

Build→Upload→Beta / Release→Targeted OTA

4. Version spread and CI/CD

Version spread

Count devices on each version, find the ones still waiting to upgrade, and target OTA by version.

Upgrade history

Look up each device’s current version and its upgrade history for a compliance audit.

CI/CD integration

The version-management API connects to CI/CD and uploads the firmware to the platform when the build finishes.

5. Where it helps

Version management already supports smart meters, in-vehicle terminals, and industrial equipment, and it backs OTA upgrades and version traceability. SimtoLink can help you write the versioning rules, configure the version policy, and fit the flow into your engineering process.

Appendix: engineering rollout and ongoing operations

Moving version management from a proof of concept to a production fleet calls for three routines at once. In a pre-release or pilot batch built like production, run stress tests and chaos drills that include connection storms, a disk written full, certificate rotation, and cross-region faults, and keep the findings as an acceptance checklist. Put metrics, alert thresholds, the on-call escalation path, and the audit retention period into the change process, so a parameter change is traceable and can be rolled back, rather than diagnosed from memory. Every quarter, engineering, operations, security, and data should recheck whether the indicators still explain business risk, and connect the actions to tickets and the release cadence. SimtoLink Device Management Platform is meant to be observable, orchestrable, and auditable as one practice: keep using the console, open APIs, and exports instead of treating go-live as the end. If the rollout has to fit your ITSM, IAM, data lake, or edge cluster, ask the SimtoLink solutions team for a joint review, practical implementation advice, and a risk list.
