1. A door that has to open while the recipient is standing there
International parcel lockers cover pickup codes, door logs, POD (proof of delivery), collection points, compartment management, and check-in and check-out. Couriers and e-commerce firms place smart lockers and collection-point units in many countries, and each one has to reach headquarters and the locker platform (LMS) while the door is being opened. The SIM is what keeps that locker online, so it has to work in every country on the estate, stay available around the clock, and answer in time.
SimtoLink supplies international IoT SIMs to cross-border couriers, e-commerce firms, and locker operators. Coverage spans 200+ countries and regions and 600+ operator networks, as eSIM or physical SIM, for smart lockers. One SIM stays in the cabinet when it is placed in another country. Code checks, a live compartment status, overdue reminders, and stuck parcels still have to run on the clock the locker operation expects.
2. The code, the compartment, the POD, and the estate
A locker covers pickup codes, door logs, POD, and compartment management. How fast the answer has to come, and how complete the record has to be, is not the same in each case:
Pickup codes and opening the door
When a courier loads a parcel, the locker reports the drop event — compartment, waybill, weight — to the locker platform. The platform issues a pickup code of 6–8 digits or a QR code and sends it by SMS or app. The recipient scans or types it, the locker checks the code in under 2 seconds, and the door opens. An overdue parcel starts a extend-or-return flow. The SIM is what keeps the cabinet talking to the platform, so a compartment is not stuck full and the turns per day fall.
Check-in, check-out, and the compartments
Every 5–15 minutes the locker reports each compartment as empty, holding a parcel, or failed, plus how full the cabinet is and whether each door is normal, jammed, or open when it should not be, to the locker platform. A jammed door or a host offline for more than 30 minutes raises a ticket. The technician sees the fault in the app and can try a remote reset; about 90% of cases never need a site visit. A fullness heatmap by cabinet or area shows where to add a locker, or how a courier should change the drop plan.
POD and an exception at the cabinet
Once the courier has dropped the parcel, the locker builds a POD — timestamp, cabinet serial, compartment — and uploads it so the courier system can close proof of delivery. If the parcel is damaged, the wrong item, or the door will not open, the recipient files an exception on the terminal. A photo of 1–5MB goes up to customer service, which is what speeds a claim. The POD has to land as it happens, because that is what the courier’s on-time score is counted against.
Collection points and more than one brand
Locker brands going abroad — Fengchao, Amazon Hub Locker — put cabinets in residential communities, office buildings, and malls in many countries, and one SIM plan covers all of them. The platform reports drop rate, pickup time, turns per compartment, and online rate by country and city, which is the input for where to add a site and how to move cabinets. A shared data pool is how the airtime cost of lockers in many countries stays one number.
3. Data per cabinet
Each locker uses about 50–200MB a month. Most of that is pickup codes and door logs, plus the messages to the locker platform. There are many cabinets and little data on each SIM, so a shared pool fits better than a plan sized for one unit.
Several SIMs can share one pool, which matches a courier with sites in many countries. The platform reports consumption by country and site and flags unusual use.
4. An address, a door command, and a cabinet that stays up
- Parcel data: A waybill and a delivery address are personal data. Send them on a private APN with TLS, in line with GDPR and the data rules of each country.
- Around the clock: A locker does not close at night. The SIM can switch among operators when one network goes quiet.
- Cabinets in many countries: A locker has to change networks on its own. Pricing is the same across those countries, and the bill is itemized.
- The open command: A pickup code and a door command cannot wait. The link has to stay low-latency.
5. What changes for a locker estate abroad
Coverage spans 200+ countries and regions and 600+ operators. A shared data pool absorbs sites in many countries. Activation and the fleet sit in one SimtoLink console. A private APN keeps locker traffic off the public internet.
6. Before the first cabinet is commissioned
Count lockers, countries, monthly data, and how the cabinet joins the locker platform. From that, choose a single SIM or a shared pool, and pay-as-you-go or a monthly bundle. Test in the countries where the cabinets will actually stand. Activate SIMs, set the APN, and bind devices in bulk on the SimtoLink platform. After go-live, alert on data use and inspect on a schedule.
SimtoLink already supplies cross-border couriers, e-commerce firms, and locker operators. If you are connecting parcel lockers abroad, contact SimtoLink for a plan built around that estate.
