How the probe reads VOC
The SimtoLink PID photoionization VOC probe is an environmental-sensing device. A UV lamp drives a photoionization (PID) chamber, and the reading stays predictable across wide temperature, wide supply voltage, and electrical noise. PID reports a broad VOC mix as isobutylene equivalent, and the same value can be shown and alarmed in ppm or ppb (1 ppm = 1000 ppb). Pick the target by ionization energy, and check lamp energy with span gas on a schedule so methane and other non-ionizable hydrocarbons are not mistaken for the compound you meant. Terminals unplug, key circuits carry a watchdog and redundant checks, and firmware is signed with rollback, which is what a shipped batch and remote service need.
The default interface is a 4~20 mA loop on industrial terminals, so the probe can join an environmental logger, a SCADA, or an IoT gateway that is already there. SimtoLink can issue an ordering note for range and resolution, and a calibration-certificate template. Volume jobs can add a printed housing, a set cable length, and calibration traceability.
CE, FCC, and the cabinet
The relevant CE/FCC items cover electrical safety and EMC. Ports include surge and reverse-polarity protection. Reinforced grounding and a partitioned layout cut ground loops and common-mode noise. Outdoor and coastal orders can take a higher ingress rating and an anti-corrosion coating.
Parameters load in a batch. Threshold policies, and event video or waveform capture, follow the model. Configuration and firmware both move by OTA. Close the site with a power-on self-test, time sync, and a sampling spot check. If the reading is used for metering or safety, SimtoLink helps with a third-party metrology submission and the type-test file.
Key specifications
These figures are a typical build of this probe, for selection and for a tender clause. A wider range, a redundant supply, or an intrinsically safe explosion-proof variant is a separate order. Ask SimtoLink for the Hardware Specification and the Installation and Commissioning Guide. Order codes in the family can differ slightly; the nameplate and the papers shipped with the probe govern.
| Parameter | Specification | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Detection principle | Photoionization (PID) | Typical 10.6 eV lamp; 11.7 eV and others can be ordered, with temperature and humidity compensation |
| Range (isobutylene equivalent) | 0~20 ppm (0~20 000 ppb) | Wide range and multi-range can be ordered; not a mass-concentration μg/m³ basis |
| Resolution | 1 ppb (0.001 ppm) | Digital display or register; the stated floor depends on the span gas and the calibration curve |
| Repeatability | ±2.0 %FS | Constant temperature and humidity |
| Zero drift | <3 ppm/month | Clean-air baseline; depends on lamp aging and fouling, so calibrate on a cycle |
| Supply | DC 12~24V | Reverse-polarity protection |
| Communications | 4~20 mA | Isolated 3 kV; optional RS485/Modbus per the contract |
| Response time (T90) | <3 s | Typical pumped or diffusion sampling |
| Warm-up | <120 s | UV lamp and circuit from a cold start; site conditions govern |
| Operating temperature | -20~50 ℃ | Industrial grade; a wide-temperature build can be ordered for extremes |
| Explosion protection | Non-explosion-proof | Optional |
Three ways it is deployed
Three layouts this probe usually takes on an IoT job, for the scheme and for a payback note:
Municipal utilities
Scattered points and outdoor cabinets. The hardware is built for wide temperature and lightning protection, for long runs and low-latency watching of water, gas, street lighting, and similar sites.
Parks and buildings
Put the PID photoionization VOC probe on the park energy system or the building controls for sub-metering, an abnormal alarm, and a linked action, so fewer rounds are walked to read a meter.
Plant and energy sites
On a line or in a power room, hand the probe to MES/EMS and collect the process value or the energy figure at the edge, then send it up.
Power, cable, and the half-year check
- Confirm the supply range and polarity before the probe is powered. If the cabinet label is unclear, measure bus voltage and breaker capacity.
- Use shielded twisted pair, ground the shield at one end, and keep a long run out of the high-power bundle.
- On the bench, prove read and write both ways and trip a threshold against the platform before the probe goes outside.
- Outdoors, drainage and a vent come first. Walk the seal faces, and set lightning-earth resistance to the local code.
- In service, take a sample and file the log every 6 months.
Documents with the order
SimtoLink includes a hardware specification, dimension drawings, a wiring table, and a sample project. Volume orders can add a sample review and an inspection at the factory. Warranty and calibration follow the contract and the papers in the box.
Where the reading is used
PID suits leak patrols, fugitive checks at the plant boundary, and a fast screen in an emergency. It answers quickly at ppm-level total hydrocarbons. The cases below turn on the explosion-proof zone, how the sample pump is set, and how the number is read.
Petrochemical units and tank farms
An explosion-proof handheld, or a fixed pumped point, with a recorded track. Peak concentration sits on GIS and a geofence. It complements flame, catalytic, and infrared gas detectors, so a low-level leak is less often missed and the time to plug it is shorter.
Vehicle and parts paint lines
Watch total hydrocarbons through the oven, the mix room, and the flash-off tunnel, and feed that into RTO airflow and the oven schedule. When the solvent or the cleaner changes, re-mark the isobutylene factor and keep the version number.
Mobile surveys by an environmental lab
A vehicle-mounted high-rate PID sample, with five weather parameters and video, builds a plume-source report and an industry-contribution note. The raw spectrum, the GPS track, and the weather are filed together in a form that forensic and enforcement work can use.
Hazardous-waste holding and sludge drying
Odor and organic vapor are watched together. A threshold starts a spray, raises negative pressure, or broadcasts a no-entry warning. A corrosion-resistant gas path, a cold trap that pulls water out, and a particulate prefilter stretch the service interval and cut consumables.
