Product overview and engineering role

The SimtoLink soft-PLC edge unit is for sites that replace a conventional controller with a software PLC runtime, or run the two side by side. Ratings on this page are for selection, a tender clause, and a later spot check. An IEC 61131-compatible runtime, data collection, and a visualization component share one box, so the cabinet holds fewer devices. Isolated I/O, a watchdog, and the safety-zone policy can be cut to the SIL you need. Signed firmware and OTA updates support volume delivery and remote maintenance.

Isolated digital and analog I/O, a fieldbus port, and a gigabit uplink are the default, so the unit can join an existing PLC, remote I/O, and SCADA. SimtoLink supplies IEC 61131 example projects, online download, and a safety-zone checklist to shorten joint commissioning. Volume builds can include a terminal-definition drawing and advice on safety-relay peripherals.

Reliability and field fit

Electrical safety and EMC coverage includes the CCC items that apply. Ports are protected against surge and reversed polarity. Reinforced grounding and a partitioned layout reduce ground-loop and common-mode interference. Outdoor or coastal sites can use a higher ingress rating and a corrosion-resistant coating.

Software supports online download, redundancy, and version rollback where the ordered model supports them. The runtime and library files update over the air. On site, finish a power-on self-test, force the I/O, and spot-check the safety loop. For metering or safety use, SimtoLink helps prepare a submission to a third-party metrology institute and supplies type-test documents.

Key hardware parameters

The table is a typical soft-PLC edge build, for selection and for a technical clause in a tender. For a wider range, redundant power, or an intrinsically safe version, ask SimtoLink for the hardware specification and the installation and commissioning guide. Order codes in the family can differ slightly; the nameplate and the documents shipped with the unit govern.

Parameter Specification Notes
PLC runtime IEC 61131-3 compatible (CODESYS and similar, by order code) Task cycle and jitter from measured results
CPU x86 or ARM embedded multi-core Core isolation and real-time patches depend on the model
Memory 8~32 GB Buffer for the project, trends, and waveform records
Storage SSD / CFast and similar (by model) Retention policy for recipes and event records
Field I/O Isolated DI/DO, AI/AO; remote I/O can be added Channel count and isolation class follow the nameplate
Fieldbus Profinet, EtherCAT, Modbus, and similar, optional Slave count and topology need a plan
Network Dual GbE IEEE 1588 if the station needs time sync
Operating temperature -20~60 ℃ (typical inside a cabinet) Inlet air and side-by-side spacing
Power DC 24 V (12~36 V wide range optional) Redundant power module optional
Mechanical DIN rail / wall-mount control box Grounding and a safety-relay peripheral optional

Typical applications

Four ways this unit is usually used, for design and for judging payback:

Small line control station

Interlocks and sequence control for one machine or one station stay in software, so the process can change without a new hardware backplane.

Pump sets and water-treatment stations

Rotation, failover, and energy logic run locally, so a lost link can still stop the plant safely.

Building mechanical and electrical plant

Group control of air conditioning, lighting, and fresh air sits on the same unit as the BACnet/Modbus devices.

Distributed energy station control

The grid-tie setpoint, storage, and the diesel generator close their loop at the edge, and only a short KPI set goes upstream.

Installation, grounding, and maintenance

  • Confirm supply range and polarity before power-up. Measure bus voltage and breaker rating if the drawing is unclear.
  • Use shielded twisted pair, ground the shield at one end, and keep it off long shared routes with high-power cables.
  • In the lab, finish a two-way read and write and a threshold trip against the platform before the unit goes to the cabinet.
  • An outdoor mount needs drainage and airflow. Recheck the seal. Lightning-earth resistance must meet the local code.
  • Every 6 months, spot-check I/O, drill a redundancy switchover, and archive logs.

Ordering, documentation, and support

Ask SimtoLink for the hardware specification, outline drawings, a wiring table, and example projects. A volume order can include a sample review and an inspector at the plant. Warranty and calibration follow the contract and the papers packed with the unit.
