Product overview
The UV index sensor module is a meteorological sensing unit for outdoor IoT. An automotive-grade ASIC carries the measurement and the link, and the reading holds across wide temperature, wide supply, and electrical noise. UVI moves with solar elevation, ozone, and cloud cover, so keep the dome out of shade and leave cosine correction and aging compensation in the path if the number has to match a public-health warning. Terminals pull out. Critical chips carry a watchdog and a redundant check. Signed firmware can be verified and rolled back, which keeps a batch shipment and remote service practical.
CAN-FD and standard industrial connectors are fitted as standard, for a SCADA, energy, or IoT platform already on site. SimtoLink supplies a southbound point table and northbound MQTT/HTTP push examples. Volume orders can add enclosure silk-screen, a set harness length, protocol mapping, and a calibration certificate.
Reliability in the field
Salt-spray and vibration type tests cover the electrical safety and EMC items that apply. Ports are protected against surge and reversed polarity. Reinforced grounding and a partitioned layout cut ground-loop and common-mode pickup. Outdoor and coastal orders can take a higher ingress rating and a corrosion-resistant coating.
Parameters load in a batch. Thresholds, and event video or waveform capture, follow the model ordered. Configuration and firmware update over the air. Close acceptance in three checks: a power-on self-test, time sync on the link, and a sample reading. For metering or safety duty, SimtoLink helps with a third-party metrology submission and the type-test file.
Key specifications
The table is a typical build, for selection and for a tender clause. A wider range, redundant supply, or an intrinsically safe variant is covered in the hardware specification and the installation and commissioning guide. Order codes in the family can differ. The nameplate and the papers shipped with the module govern.
| Parameter | Specification | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Measurement range (UVI) | 0~15 UVI (extendable) | Standard ultraviolet index, dimensionless; aligned with public-health broadcasts |
| Reading resolution | 0.1 UVI | Set in the register or the protocol |
| Spectral weighting | Erythemal action spectrum, approximate | Automotive-grade ASIC UV-sensitive area, with temperature compensation and an aging strategy |
| Cosine response | Cosine correction for a horizontal mount | Keep shade, a dirty dome, and nearby reflectors off the sensor |
| Typical accuracy | ±1 UVI (@ reference conditions) | Factory calibration and the type-test report govern; compare on site at high altitude or over snow |
| Sampling and report | 1~60 s configurable | Power draw, the radio, and the platform policy all affect the interval |
| Operating temperature | -40~70 ℃ (typical) | Order-code differences follow the nameplate |
| Supply | PoE powered / wide-range DC | Isolated and redundant supply can be specified |
| Communications | CAN-FD; 4~20mA + RS485; 4G/NB optional | Parallel access from more than one system; northbound MQTT/HTTP examples on request |
| Ingress rating | IP54 | Outdoor build optional to IP67; explosion-proof housing optional |
Typical deployments
Three layouts that show up on IoT jobs, for the design and for a payback check:
Manufacturing and energy sites
Drop the module onto a line or into a switchroom and pass process values or energy totals up to MES or EMS without a second collector.
Municipal and utility sites
Cabinets out on the network, and points that sit far apart. The wide-temperature build and the lightning path fit water, gas, and street lighting where the hop is long and the delay has to stay short.
Campuses and buildings
Once the UV index sensor module is on the campus energy system or the building controller, sub-metering, alarms, and linked actions take the place of a clipboard round.
Installation, grounding, and maintenance
- Confirm the supply range and polarity before the module is energized. If the drawing is thin, check bus voltage and breaker rating with a multimeter.
- Run communications as shielded twisted pair, grounded at one end, and keep it out of long shared routes with high-power cable.
- On the bench, finish a two-way read and write and a threshold trip against the platform before the module goes outside.
- An outdoor mount needs a path for water to leave and air to move. Recheck the seal face. Lightning-earth resistance has to meet the local rule.
- In long service, sample a reading and archive logs every 12 months.
Ordering, documentation, and support
Ask SimtoLink for the hardware specification, an outline drawing, the wiring table, and a sample project. Volume orders can include a sample review and an inspector at the plant. Warranty and calibration follow the contract and the documents packed with the module.
Where the index is used
A UVI feed supports public sun protection, tourism safety, and supervision of phototherapy equipment, and it should be checked against total radiation or sunshine hours. The jobs below differ in who reads the number and how often it has to be trusted.
City weather for the public
Scenic-spot screens, subway TVs, and mini-programs push the day's UV peak, the level, and protection advice from an open rooftop reference station after quality control. Shown with AQI, ozone, and the heat index, the display is less likely to be read as a particle-pollution warning.
Schools and outdoor sports
Playgrounds, pools, and military-training grounds post the UV change as it happens, and can pause a session, shift a class, or prompt a water break. A parent subscription can use a geofence and the dismissal window, which fits school-safety and physical-education checks.
Plateau tourism and climbing routes
Micro-stations and camp posts along the route close the gaps and flag extra UV from snow and water reflection. Low-power solar and BeiDou short-message return suit uninhabited stretches, for tourism safety supervision and rescue dispatch.
Cosmetics and light-stability tests
A bypass sensor logs spectral weighted dose and the temperature and humidity history through an outdoor accelerated sun-exposure test. Lab standard lamps and on-site daylight are cross-checked so batch stability and the registration file stay comparable.
