A water meter that reports without a visit
A smart water meter uses NB-IoT or 4G for remote reading, prepay, leak monitoring, and analysis of how water is used. That replaces someone walking into the home. Household meters are mostly on a battery, so the module has to be very low power, with PSM and eDRX, if the battery is to last past 10 years. SimtoLink modules for this work are 4G / 5G / NB-IoT, industrial temperature range, with UART, SPI, and I2C. The company supports 500+ enterprise customers and has connected more than 10 million water meters.
A flat, a factory, a DMA zone, and a village supply
A household meter, a commercial meter, a DMA zone, and a rural supply point do not share a power budget. These are the usual water jobs, and the radio that tends to fit.
Household meters
Mechanical or ultrasonic meters report daily or monthly use over NB-IoT at low power. That supports tiered tariffs, prepay, and CJ/T 188. Battery life can pass 10 years, which is what household billing needs.
Commercial and industrial meters
A 4G module carries live flow, pressure, and an instantaneous flow curve. Commercial users need that for water management, a water-saving check, and analysis of what they use.
DMA leakage
A DMA zone, a pressure point, and a flow meter send leak data through the module. The gap between water supplied and water billed, where the leak sits, and how the network should be retuned all come from that.
Rural drinking-water projects
Meters on scattered rural supplies report over NB-IoT. The drinking-water safety program can count use and dispatch work without sending a reader to every point.
Secondary supply
A booster pump room, tank level, and water-quality readings go up through the module. That is how secondary supply is watched, and how the water that reaches a flat stays safe.
What the readings are for
Readings from many meters meet on the water cloud. Unusual use, a profile of who uses what, and a forecast of demand are what a utility decides from.
What a meter in a wet pit asks of the module
- A battery past 10 years: Household meters usually run on a battery. The module needs PSM and eDRX, standby current in the μA range, and life past 10 years.
- NB-IoT at home, 4G on the network: Household meters prefer NB-IoT to keep power down. Commercial meters and network monitoring can use 4G when the reading has to be timely and the pipe wider.
- Outdoors, a pit, a basement: −40°C to 85°C, and protection from moisture and condensation.
- The meter's own pulse and protocol: Flow meters, a pulse output, and Modbus, over CJ/T 188 and DL/T 645.
- From a sample to volume: SimtoLink modules span 2G, 3G, 4G, and 5G, with documentation, an AT command set, an SDK, and production supply.
Which radio fits a household meter, and which fits a DMA zone
How often it reports, the pipe, power, and cost do not line up the same way for a flat and a commercial meter. Meter type, the reading interval, and battery life should decide the module. The rows below are the usual pairing for water.
| Job | Radio | What matters |
|---|---|---|
| Household meters | NB-IoT | Very low power, daily or monthly reads, a 10-year battery, CJ/T 188 |
| Industrial and commercial water meters | 4G | Live flow and pressure, frequent reports, analysis of use |
| DMA leakage monitoring | 4G | Live pressure and flow, leak analysis, retuning the network |
| Rural supply, secondary supply | NB-IoT | Infrequent reads, low cost, scattered sites, a battery |
How SimtoLink fits a water-meter program
For water meters, the modules are industrial designs that hold temperature and moisture, with technical support 7×24. NB-IoT is the recommendation for household meters and rural supplies, where reads are rare and the battery has to last. 4G is for commercial meters and DMA leakage, where the report has to be timely and the pipe wider. An SDK a meter team can bring up quickly, work with mainstream chip vendors, and a named account manager come with the module.
A meter design is taken from the requirements and the radio choice, through a prototype on a small set of homes, and into volume. Documentation, the AT command set, an SDK, and sample code ship with the module, and supply is planned for a production run and for the years the meters stay in the ground. Leak control keeps adding meters that need a radio, and the module line will follow that.
How a water project usually moves
A water-meter project usually moves in this order:
The choice turns on meter type (household, commercial, or a point on the network), battery life (a household meter wants PSM and eDRX, and 10 years), the pit (a chamber wants a wide temperature range and moisture protection), and the protocol (CJ/T 188, DL/T 645). Start small and check the read success rate, whether the leak analysis holds, and coverage. Household meters should use NB-IoT. Commercial meters and DMA monitoring can use 4G.
Remote reading replaces a visit, cuts operating cost, and supports tiered tariffs, prepay, and leak control. SimtoLink has supplied modules to water utilities and meter makers.
