1. What condition monitoring asks of the SIM
Equipment condition monitoring, together with CBM (condition-based maintenance) and PHM (prognostics and health management), is a core job in industrial IoT and smart manufacturing. Vibration, temperature, and current sensors collect how a machine is running, send that up, and let the cloud analyze it. That supports fault alarms, predictive maintenance, and spectrum analysis, which cuts unplanned stops and stretches equipment life. The SimtoLink SIM on an industrial gateway or acquisition terminal carries vibration, temperature, and alarms.
SimtoLink works with manufacturing, energy, mining, and ports on this link. 4G / NB-IoT / LTE Cat.1 SIMs run on China Mobile, China Unicom, and China Telecom, across 2G/3G/4G/5G. The choice follows the site, the sample rate, and how much data comes back. The management platform covers data monitoring, plan management, and fault diagnosis for the life of the SIM.
2. Which machines are being watched
Monitoring splits into rotating machines, motors and pumps, wind and solar, production lines, and critical equipment. Sample rate, data volume, and timing are not the same in each. Typical jobs and how to choose the SIM:
Vibration on rotating machines
Fans, compressors, pumps, and motors collect vibration through vibration sensors and accelerometers. Edge computing or the cloud then runs spectrum analysis and fault diagnosis. A 4G SIM reports waveforms, feature values, and alarms, which is what CBM needs.
Motors and pumps
Industrial motors, centrifugal pumps, and gearboxes score equipment health from vibration, temperature, and current. NB-IoT or LTE Cat.1 carries low-rate feature values. 4G carries high-rate waveforms when the diagnosis has to be precise.
Wind turbines and solar inverters
Wind turbines and PV inverters often sit in remote places. A 4G SIM is what brings SCADA data, vibration, and fault alarms back. It can connect to the operations platform and an OEE (overall equipment effectiveness) system.
Production lines and critical machines
CNC machines, presses, and injection molders send vibration, temperature, and process values through an industrial gateway. A 4G SIM connects to MES and a PHM platform so maintenance and production can share the same picture.
Predictive maintenance and fault alarms
A CBM system estimates remaining useful life (RUL) from history and a model, then opens a maintenance work order. A 4G SIM keeps waveforms, feature values, and alarms arriving so operations can act.
Industrial gateways and edge collection
An industrial gateway gathers many sensor channels, runs edge preprocessing, and then reports to the cloud. A 4G SIM carries Modbus and OPC UA, which is how older machines get onto the network.
3. How much data a monitored machine uses
A device in this use case typically uses about 50-200MB a month. The figure moves with sample rate, packet size, and whether waveforms, spectra, or video are included. On a typical 4G setup, feature values, temperature, and alarms are about 2-7MB a day. High-rate waveforms or spectra can reach several hundred MB. NB-IoT fits low-rate feature values, about 5-20MB a month.
Leave 20%-30% spare for the gap between busy and quiet periods. A data pool lets many SIMs share one allowance as the machine count moves. The platform alerts when usage crosses the threshold you set. Edge preprocessing, compressed feature values, and threshold reporting cut the volume.
4. What the plant link has to guarantee
- Coverage in an industrial site: Factories, mines, and wind farms often sit in suburbs or remote areas, so more than one operator is what keeps them reachable. The environment needs a wide temperature range, dust protection, and EMC immunity.
- Alarms that still arrive: A fault alarm has to go out in time. A drop delays the maintenance decision. Cache locally, then backfill so the record stays whole.
- Security and compliance: Industrial data needs end-to-end encryption and a private VPN or VPDN. SimtoLink provides a private APN and an IP allowlist, in line with industrial-control security and graded protection (MLPS).
- A clean handoff: An API connects SCADA, MES, the PHM platform, and a CMMS (computerized maintenance management system) so operations can close the loop.
- Edge and cloud together: High-rate vibration can be reduced to feature values at the edge before it is sent, which cuts bandwidth and cloud compute.
5. Which SIM fits which machine
Bandwidth, delay, and cost differ by job. Sample rate, data volume, and the site all belong in the choice. Use the table as a starting point:
| Use | Recommended network | Why it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Rotating machines and vibration | 4G | Waveforms and feature values, spectrum analysis, live alarms |
| Motors and pumps, low-rate monitoring | NB-IoT / LTE Cat.1 | Feature values, lower cost, long battery life |
| Wind, solar, remote sites | 4G | SCADA, vibration, fault alarms, wide coverage |
| Industrial gateways and edge collection | 4G | Many channels, Modbus/OPC UA, moderate bandwidth |
6. Security around the machine record
Treat this deployment as high security. Sessions need end-to-end encryption and a private VPN or VPDN. SimtoLink provides a private APN and an IP allowlist. The APN keeps the IoT channel off the public internet. The allowlist limits each device to named servers. Traffic control watches for abnormal use. Real-name registration meets the national requirement, and SimtoLink completes it in one process. Industrial sites also have to meet industrial-control security and graded protection (MLPS).
7. What SimtoLink would put on the machine
For condition monitoring, use 4G / NB-IoT IoT SIMs. Plan on 99.9% network availability, operator selection, and round-the-clock technical support. Monthly, annual, and data-pool plans cover different fleet sizes. The platform supports batch operations, live monitoring, and report export, and the API connects to SCADA, MES, and the PHM platform.
8. Putting sensors on the line
Take a condition-monitoring rollout through these stages:
When you choose, weigh sample rate (waveform or feature values), where it sits (indoors, outdoors, or remote), and which system it joins (SCADA, MES, PHM). Start with one machine or one line and check network quality and whether the record stays complete. Rotating machines and industrial gateways should use 4G. Low-rate monitoring on motors and pumps can use NB-IoT or LTE Cat.1 to keep cost down.
