1. What an airport device asks of the SIM

Smart aviation covers airports, ground handling, flight support, and baggage tracking. Device data, video, and position go up over 4G. SimtoLink gives aviation companies 4G, a shared data pool, classified-protection compliance, and an API into the operations platform.

2. The terminal, the bag, or the apron

Smart aviation covers the airport, ground handling, and the flight. Bandwidth and how live the update has to be are not the same in each:

Self-service and check-in

Self-service check-in and bag drop report over 4G, for check-in, a bag tag, and a printed boarding pass.

Baggage tracking and sorting

Bag RFID and the sortation system report over 4G, for end-to-end tracking, an exception alert, and a passenger lookup.

Ground-handling equipment

Apron buses, jet bridges, and other ground equipment report over 4G, for dispatch, maintenance, and fuel.

Airport monitoring and security

Cameras send video over 4G for security monitoring, behavior analysis, and emergency command.

3. What the aviation link has to guarantee

  • Flight state as it happens: Position, attitude, and speed of an aircraft or a drone have to keep coming up. A gap in that stream is a safety risk.
  • HD pictures and commands: Surveying and delivery drones need live image backhaul and a low-latency command. 4G/5G is what covers both the bandwidth and the reliability.
  • Flight information and the passenger: An air-ground link and onboard Wi-Fi need a wide pipe. Flight status has to stay in step on a stable, low-latency connection.
  • Handover across regions: A flight that crosses provinces or a border needs intelligent switching among operators, so the session stays up through a cell change.
  • Safety and compliance: Aviation equipment needs a private APN that stays off the public network, meeting CAAC and RTCA, and blocking access that was not authorized.

4. Which SIM fits which aviation device

Network, bandwidth, and power draw differ by job. Device type and the work both belong in the choice:

UseRecommended networkWhy it fits
Drones and UAVs for delivery and surveying4G/5GLive image backhaul, command control, position tracking
Ground support and baggage tracking4GFlight status, bag location, ground-handling dispatch
Airport systems and environmental monitoring4G/NB-IoTEquipment status, runway monitoring, security linkage

5. How much data an airport device uses

One device typically uses about 200MB-2GB a month, mostly video and data. Pool by area, leave 20%-30% spare, and keep the path on a VPDN with classified-protection compliance.

6. Security around the airport

Treat this deployment as very high security. Aviation is a safety system, so it needs classified protection (MLPS), a VPDN, Chinese commercial cryptography, and an IP allowlist. SimtoLink supplies financial-grade protection and completes real-name registration in one process.

7. What SimtoLink would put on the apron

For smart aviation, use 4G IoT SIMs on ground-handling equipment, baggage tracking, and apron monitoring. Ground equipment has to stay online while it moves. Baggage tracking has to report as the bag moves. Plan on 99.9% network availability, a choice of operators, a shared data pool, and an API into the ground-services platform.

8. Putting the first devices airside

Take an airport rollout through these stages:

Operation review→ Compliance review→ Coverage test→ Dedicated APN→ Integration test→ Go live

Choose by area and by device. Check coverage at the airport. Set a VPDN or APN, an allowlist, and an alert at 80% of the data allowance. SimtoLink stays from the compliance review through support. Contact us for a SIM plan sized to that airport.
