Smart Airport Solution

Flight turnaround, passenger service, baggage tracking, and apron dispatch, for a more efficient airport and a better trip

Solution Overview

The smart airport solution is built for civil-aviation airport operators. Over IoT and big data, it digitizes the flight turnaround, lets passengers move with less friction, tracks baggage end to end, dispatches apron vehicles, and manages energy. An airport is a transport hub where flights, passengers, baggage, ground handling, and energy have to work together. Manual dispatch and paper processes are slow and error-prone, and that caps on-time performance and passenger satisfaction.

IoT connectivity covers flight turnaround (milestone capture, progress monitoring, and exception alerts), baggage tracking (RFID tracking through the whole journey, with misroute alerts), frictionless travel (face recognition, self-service check-in, and smart security screening), and apron dispatch (specialist vehicles and ground staff assigned in software). It spans check-in, security screening, boarding, baggage, the apron, and energy, and it lifts operating efficiency, on-time performance, and passenger satisfaction. It can connect to AOC, FOC, the baggage system, and the security screening system, so operations run digitally from one end to the other.

Civil Aviation Policy and Building a Smart Airport

The Civil Aviation Administration of China's Smart Civil Aviation Construction Roadmap sets five goals: one face for the journey, one document for logistics, one inspection to clear, one network for operations, and one platform for supervision. IATA Resolution 753 requires airlines worldwide to track baggage through the whole journey, and RFID is the approach most of them use. Aprons, jet bridges, and remote stands often have no cable, so 4G and 5G keep mobile devices, sensors, and ground-handling terminals online. A large hub sees more than 100,000 passengers a day, and turnaround milestones run into the thousands. IoT capture and live sync are the base for digital operations.

The links are not all the same. Check-in desks and security lanes already have cable. Apron vehicles, handheld terminals for ground staff, and equipment at remote stands need 4G or 5G. RFID read points for baggage are spread out, and they can use 4G or LoRa. SimtoLink supplies connections across those radio types, with APIs into AOC, FOC, the baggage system, and security screening.

Implementation Notes

Roll it out in stages. Stage one: put apron vehicles and ground-handling terminals on 4G or 5G, for location, task dispatch, and progress reports. Stage two: connect baggage RFID nodes so the full tracking record uploads as bags move. Stage three: capture turnaround milestones over IoT and feed them to AOC and FOC. An airport is an aviation-safety environment. Equipment has to meet the relevant civil-aviation rules, and the connection has to stay highly available and low-latency.

Core Functional Modules

The operating chain of an airport, from check-in to the apron

Flight turnaround

Milestone capture, progress monitoring, and exception alerts. Check-in, load planning, loading and unloading, refueling, and de-icing are captured in software and sent to AOC and FOC, so the turnaround is visible and an exception is flagged.

Baggage tracking

RFID tracking through the whole journey, with misroute alerts. From check-in to loading, and from unloading to reclaim, each point can be traced, and a misroute or a delay raises an alert as it happens.

Frictionless travel

Face recognition, self-service check-in, and smart security screening. A passenger moves on one face: self-service check-in, self-service bag drop, smart screening, and boarding by face, so the trip takes less time.

Apron dispatch

Specialist vehicles and ground staff assigned in software. Shuttle buses, baggage vehicles, and fuel trucks are located and dispatched, and ground-staff tasks and progress are tracked.

Typical Use Cases

Large hub airports

Throughput in the tens of millions of passengers, digitized across the whole process

Regional trunk airports

Throughput in the millions, with the critical steps run in software

Feeder and general-aviation airports

Smaller airports, deployed in a lighter form

Cargo hubs

Air cargo, cold chain, and supervision of dangerous goods

Connectivity Notes

A smart airport ties together check-in, security screening, boarding, baggage, the apron, and energy. The links include 4G and 5G, Wi-Fi, LoRa, and cable. SimtoLink supplies 4G and 5G IoT SIMs, a data pool, and APIs into the airport's business systems. Aprons and jet bridges often have no cable, so 4G and 5G keep mobile devices and sensors online. The same connection can reach AOC, FOC, the baggage system, security screening, and the energy management system, so operations run digitally from one end to the other.
