Smarter steelmaking, rolling, equipment, energy, and safety and environment, for high-quality development of the steel industry
Using IoT, AI, and digital twins, the solution gives steelmakers monitoring of steelmaking and rolling, predictive maintenance, energy optimization, and safety and environmental control. China produces more than half of the world’s steel, yet the industry still faces overcapacity, environmental pressure, dual control of energy consumption, and too few high-end products. Temperature, pressure, vibration, and vision sensors collect data from blast furnaces, converters, rolling mills, and the rest of the process. AI predicts molten-steel chemistry, closes the loop on strip shape, warns of equipment faults, and trims energy use, so output rises and emissions fall.
It covers ironmaking, steelmaking, rolling, logistics, and storage, and connects to MES, ERP, and the energy management system. A digital twin builds a three-dimensional model of the line for process improvement and training. Balancing by-product gas, steam, and power, and recovering waste heat and residual pressure, can cut comprehensive energy use per tonne of steel by 5%–10%. The system meets steel-industry rules on safety, environment, and energy saving, and supports a greener, higher-quality industry.
The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology’s 14th Five-Year Plan for the Raw Materials Industry calls on steel to advance intelligent manufacturing and a low-carbon shift. The Action Plan for Carbon Peaking and Carbon Reduction in the Steel Industry sets a cut of more than 2% in comprehensive energy use per tonne of steel by 2025. Mills face dual control of energy consumption, ultra-low emissions, and capacity replacement. Production optimization, predictive maintenance, and energy balancing can lower energy per tonne, cut unplanned stops, and raise the share of high-end products. In typical use, AI on the blast furnace can cut the coke rate by 2%–3%; closed-loop strip-shape control can raise yield by 0.5%–1%; predictive maintenance can cut unplanned downtime by more than 50%.
Start with the data foundation: Connect PLC, DCS, and sensor data from ironmaking, steelmaking, and rolling into one collection and storage platform. Plants are hot, dusty, and electrically noisy, so use industrial gateways and sensors that meet the required protection rating.
Bring AI in one use at a time: Start with a single application, such as blast-furnace temperature prediction, strip-shape control, or vibration warning, and widen it after the result is proven. Models should carry process knowledge and be refined with process engineers.
Tie energy to environment: Link the energy system to production scheduling so by-product gas, steam, and power stay in balance. Tie environmental readings to production and emissions, so compliance and further cuts sit on the same data.
