Zigbee Technology

Low-power Mesh Network

Definition

Zigbee is a low-power, short-range wireless communication standard based on the IEEE 802.15.4 physical/link layer, developed by the Zigbee Alliance (now Connectivity Standards Alliance). Zigbee operates in the 2.4GHz global ISM band (as well as the 868MHz and 915MHz regional bands), uses CSMA-CA access, supports Mesh topology and self-organizing networks, and a single network can support tens of thousands of nodes. Along with Thread and 6LoWPAN, it belongs to the 802.15.4 ecosystem, but Zigbee uses its own application layer (ZCL, ZDO), is not IP-native, and requires a gateway to interoperate with the Internet; it can be combined with 6LoWPAN to achieve IPv6 access (Zigbee IP).

Protocol Stack and Network Roles

The Zigbee protocol stack includes: PHY/MAC (802.15.4), network layer (routing, discovery, joining), application layer (APS, ZCL Zigbee Cluster Library). Network roles are divided into Coordinator (builds the network), Router (relay), and End Device (can sleep). It uses AODV-like on-demand routing and supports a hybrid of tree and Mesh topologies. In terms of security, it supports AES-128-CCM encryption, centralized key distribution via a Trust Center, and network joining authentication.

Core Features

  • Low Power and Low Cost: Low transmission and reception power consumption; End Devices can run on batteries for several years; low chip cost, suitable for large-scale deployment.
  • Mesh Networking and Self-Healing: Multi-hop routing, automatic path reselection in case of link failures, with expandable coverage
  • 250kbps Rate: Meets low-rate services such as sensors and control commands, differentiating from Bluetooth and Wi-Fi
  • Large-Scale Nodes: 16-bit short address + 64-bit extended address, theoretically supports 65,535 nodes

Typical Use Cases

Zigbee is widely used in smart lighting (Philips Hue, IKEA Trådfri), smart homes (temperature control, door locks, security sensors), industrial IoT (sensor networks, asset tracking), building automation, smart agriculture, and more. Zigbee 3.0 unifies historical protocol branches and enhances interoperability; Zigbee PRO provides more complete routing and security capabilities, and is the current mainstream commercial version.

SimtoLink focuses on cellular IoT SIM cards as its core business, complementing short-range protocols like Zigbee. In scenarios such as smart homes and industrial sites, Zigbee handles local device interconnection and data collection, while cellular networks transfer aggregated data to the cloud or remote monitoring centers. SimtoLink can provide customers with hybrid networking solution recommendations of "Zigbee gateway + cellular backhaul," achieving low-cost, low-power end-to-end IoT connectivity in scenarios requiring wide-area coverage and local Mesh coordination.
