Definition

MeterValues is the standard message in the OCPP (Open Charge Point Protocol) protocol used by charging stations to report metering data such as electricity consumption, power, voltage, and current to charging platforms. The MeterValues message is sent during the charging process either at configured intervals (e.g., every 60 seconds) or when triggered by events, and includes a timestamp, connectorId, and an array of meterValues (each containing measurand, value, unitOfMeasure, etc.), supporting charging billing, CDR generation, and real-time monitoring of charging operation platforms. Combined with metering, MeterValues serves as the carrier for reporting metering data; when combined with OCPI, the metering data in CDRs can be exchanged across platforms, supporting cross-border charging settlement.

Technical Features and Architecture

The technical architecture of MeterValues includes: Message structure —MeterValues.req contains connectorId, transactionId, meterValue[], each item containing timestamp, sampledValue[]; Measurand types —Energy.Active.Import.Register (cumulative energy), Power.Active.Import (real-time power), Current.Import, Voltage, etc.; Reporting strategy —Periodic reporting (e.g., every 60 seconds), summarized reporting at StopTransaction; Relationship with CDR —MeterValues data is used to generate CDR (Charge Detail Record), exchanged between CPO and eMSP via OCPI . In cross-border scenarios, MeterValues are returned to the cloud charging platform via IoT SIM cards, and the terminal needs to support one card for multiple countries to ensure cross-border charging data reporting.

Application in IoT and cross-border scenarios

MeterValues are widely used in: Charging Billing —— Charging Stations Real-time reporting of electricity and power to Charging Operation Platform , supporting consumption-based billing and CDR generation; Charging Monitoring ——The platform displays charging power and accumulated electricity in real time, triggering fault alerts in case of anomalies; Cross-border Charging ——MeterValues of overseas charging stations are reported back via IoT SIM cards, supporting OCPI cross-border settlement and multi-country operator interconnection; Data Synchronization ——Together with data synchronization , MeterValues data can be synchronized to billing systems and energy management platforms. Cross-border charging networks and global charging interconnection rely on MeterValues to achieve standardized transmission and settlement of metering data.

SimtoLink provides connectivity to devices such as charging stations across 200+ countries, assisting the cross-border reporting of metering data such as MeterValues.
