Mental Health

About 2.9 psychiatrists per 100,000 people, and a wristband that has to notice first

Too Few Clinicians, and a Device That Has to Notice

China has about 40,000 psychiatrists, roughly 2.9 per 100,000 people, well under the world average. Depression and anxiety are rising, and the sharp end is adolescents and people at work. The 14th Five-Year National Health Plan treats mental health as a system to build, not a poster. The devices in that system are a biofeedback unit, a VR therapy rig, a wearable that watches mood physiology, and an assessment kiosk. They exist because the clinician cannot be in every room.

The service market is above RMB 50 billion and growing about 15% a year. Schools, from primary through university, are supposed to have a mental-health teacher and a counseling room. Corporate EAP is spreading. Some digital therapeutics are registered as Class II devices. An HRV SDNN under 50 ms is the figure people treat as a sign that stress or anxiety is up. A wearable used for that reading should sample at 100 Hz or faster, or the HRV number is not worth filing.

The Mental Health Law is the service rule. The Ten Articles on Mental Health Literacy are the public version. Psychological data is sensitive personal information under the Personal Information Protection Law. A clinical-grade device still needs registration. Consent, collecting only what the intervention needs, and a path to a crisis response are the ethics, not a footnote.

What a Paper Follow-up Misses

A high-risk person between appointments. Depression and suicidal ideation need a watch that does not depend on someone remembering to call. A wearable reads HRV, sleep, and activity. With a questionnaire and a model, that becomes a risk level, and an exception goes to a counselor or a crisis line while there is still time to act.

A therapy room that still keeps paper. Biofeedback, VR exposure, and transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) sit in different rooms. The session log is a form. Once the device is online, parameters, minutes, and the outcome file themselves. A clinician can change the plan from another site, and a study has a record that was not typed up later.

A county with no specialist in the building. An assessment kiosk and a video consult over 4G or 5G put a first screen into a community, a school, or a company. A model does the first sort. A person still makes the referral.

Where the Link Is Used

The wearable. A band or a chest patch sends heart rate, HRV, skin conductance, and sleep over Bluetooth or 4G. The model reads that next to the questionnaire and flags anxiety or depression risk. It is used at home and in follow-up after treatment.

The kiosk. A self-service assessment terminal in a school, a company, or a community uploads over 4G. A counselor sees the result and books a room or a video call. The kiosk's own fault is watched remotely, so the service does not end because a screen died over a weekend.

The therapy device. VR exposure, biofeedback, and TMS report parameters, use, and outcome. That is what a multi-center study and a remote quality check run on. The maker can service and upgrade the unit without a site visit for every patch.

Who Sells It, and Two Pilots

Upstream is the wearable sensor, the VR rig, and the biofeedback instrument. Midstream is the platform and the risk model. Downstream is the psychiatric hospital, the school, and a company's EAP. One university put in 50 assessment terminals and 200 wearables. An HRV-plus-questionnaire model moved the average lead before a crisis intervention from 3 days to 14. An EAP pilot's stress alerts were right about 82% of the time, and absenteeism fell about 12%.

Terms on the same chart: HRV, heart-rate variability, read against mood and stress; DTx, a digital therapeutic, an evidence-based intervention delivered by software or a device; EAP, an employee assistance program; biofeedback, showing a person their own physiology so they can change it.

Where It Is Heading

Models that take more than one signal are getting better at the risk call. VR, including the experiments people label a metaverse, is where immersive treatment is being tried. Policy is pushing the service down to places that never had a psychiatrist on staff, which is why the device count is rising. SimtoLink supplies 4G and 5G for the band, the kiosk, and the therapy unit, with the privacy constraint treated as part of the link rather than a sticker on the box.

Summary

The shortage is clinicians, not questionnaires. A wearable, a kiosk, and a therapy device that files its own session are how a warning arrives before the next scheduled call. SimtoLink's part is that link, including a campus band that cannot assume the student is on the school Wi-Fi.
