Smart Sports Venues

IoT for booking a court, opening a gate, and seeing what the treadmill already knows

Venues and the Smart Version

China has more than 4 million sports venues: public halls, school grounds, fitness clubs, and community gyms. The 14th Five-Year Plan for Sports Development sets a target of 2.6 square meters of sports space per person, and 38.5% of people exercising regularly. Operators struggle with empty courts, loose membership records, late equipment repairs, and weak event service.

A smart venue uses IoT, a mobile app, and AI for online booking, smart gates, connected fitness machines, workout data, and event timing and scoring. Gates, treadmills, spin bikes, and body analyzers talk to a cloud platform. Utilization can rise by 15%-30%, and both the member’s visit and the way the site is run get better.

Market Size and Penetration

China’s smart-venue market was about RMB 8 billion in 2023 and is expected to pass RMB 15 billion in 2027, a CAGR of about 17%. Clubs and public halls want the upgrade. Policy that opens school grounds to the public is driving booking and access systems. About 25%-35% of smart fitness machines, such as treadmills and spin bikes, are online, and the leading chains have deployed them across the brand.

Cases and the Industry Chain

A fitness chain. Treadmills, spin bikes, and body analyzers in more than 500 stores are online. Workout data syncs to the app. Monthly active members rose by about 30%, and card renewals rose by about 12%.

A provincial sports center. Turnstiles, crowd counts, and centralized lighting and sound. During events, entry throughput rose by about 50%. Faults are diagnosed remotely, and maintenance cost fell by about 25%.

School grounds opened to the public. Fifty primary and secondary schools in one city added booking and access control. 4G IoT SIM cards avoided new cabling. Utilization in the open hours rose by about 40%.

Industry chain. Equipment makers (fitness machines, turnstiles, body analyzers), the venue management system, connectivity, and the operator. One venue usually has 20-200 IoT endpoints. A fitness machine uses about 100-500 MB a month.

Policy and Standards

The National Fitness Plan and the Basic Public Service Standards for Public Sports Venues push venues to open and to serve better. The Regulations on the Safety Management of Large-Scale Public Events set event security. There is no single national standard for venue IT, so projects borrow from smart-building and security standards. Devices have to cope with a crowd and with many of them online at once.

Terms

Venue management system: bookings, members, fees, and equipment, tied to the IoT devices. (This page uses the abbreviation WMS for that system.)

Body composition analyzer: body-fat percentage, muscle mass, and related measures, uploaded into the member record.

Timing and scoring: results and rankings at an event, linked to displays and the public-address system.

Core Pain Points

Courts sit empty, and bookings clash

Phone and walk-up booking is slow, so empty slots and double bookings happen together. There is no live view of what is free. A smart booking system can raise utilization by 15%-30%.

Members are hard to keep

Member records are scattered, and workouts are not logged, so offers stay generic. Once the machines are online they can collect duration and energy used, which supports a member profile and a warning before someone leaves.

Machines fail, and safety waits on a complaint

A treadmill or a strength machine is often reported only when a member complains. Status is not watched, which is a safety gap. IoT supports a fault warning and remote diagnosis.

IoT Use Cases

Gates and booking

Turnstiles and face-recognition doors sit on the network with the booking system. Entry is by QR code or face. Memberships, single visits, and class check-ins close themselves.

Fitness machines

Treadmills, spin bikes, and ellipticals connect over 4G/5G or Wi-Fi. Duration, distance, and heart rate go to the member app. A fault or odd use raises an alarm.

Body tests and health data

Analyzers and smart bands feed a fitness report and a trend. Tied to personal training and nutrition advice, that record is what keeps a member coming back.

Events

Timing gear, large screens, and public address are online for a live event and for posting results. A large venue also watches the crowd and guides an evacuation.

Where This Is Heading

AI in the workout. Movement recognition, posture correction, and a personal plan are moving into daily use.

Home and the venue on one record. Home equipment joins the venue membership so online and in-person workouts sit together.

Digital events. Amateur meets and school sports combine timing, a live stream, and registration.

Summary

A smart venue uses IoT for booking, connected equipment, and the data those machines produce. Utilization and the member’s visit both improve. A stable link for gates, fitness machines, and body analyzers is the base.

SimtoLink supplies 4G/5G IoT SIM cards and modules for gates, fitness machines, and analyzers, with multi-operator switching and room for many devices at once.
