Mechanism
WebSocket maintains a long connection after the HTTP upgrade handshake, allowing the server to push data proactively. It is suitable for real-time dashboards and bidirectional signaling. Load balancers and proxies need to support WebSocket pass-through; under cellular NAT, it relies on ping/pong for keep-alive.
Compared with MQTT
Both can operate in real time, but MQTT leans more toward the IoT message broker model; WebSocket is often used as a channel between the browser and the cloud, or encapsulated within a cloud platform gateway.
Resources
On MCUs, TLS and memory usage need to be evaluated; in weak networks with frequent reconnections, exponential backoff should be applied.
Heartbeat, proxy, and cellular NAT
WebSocket long connections behind HTTP proxies and operator NATs require application-layer ping/pong keep-alive, with intervals shorter than the session timeout. In cellular scenarios, IP changes or PDP reconnections will cause disconnections, so the client must listen to module URC and reconnect. If the server cluster uses sticky sessions, load balancers must support WebSocket upgrades and stickiness; otherwise, a message broker is needed to synchronize state. The choice between binary and text frames affects bandwidth and parsing cost; IoT commands commonly use JSON or Protobuf payloads.
Architectural trade-offs compared with MQTT
Browsers and mini-program scenarios naturally favor WebSocket; if the device side already has an MQTT ecosystem, it can be converted via a gateway in the cloud. When evaluating, pay attention to the number of connections, memory per connection, and protection against broadcast storms. Under weak network conditions, push frequency and single-frame size should be limited to avoid blocking control commands. For security, in addition to TLS, Origin and token scope should be verified to prevent malicious web scripts from abusing the device channel.
Engineering Practice Supplement
Combine "WebSocket" with the module's entire lifecycle: In the EVT phase, verify reference design and antenna solutions; in the DVT phase, conduct conduction/radiation baseline tests and thermal imaging; in the PVT phase, solidify calibration and test scripts. Before certification, check the target country's regulations and operator registration requirements to avoid missing frequency bands or SAR items. On the production line, retain golden sample comparisons and spot check rules; after-sales should be able to trace software versions, calibration parameters, and key component batches by serial number. If customers require remote maintenance, security upgrade, rollback, and emergency shutdown strategies should also be designed.
What Keeps the Long Connection Up After the Upgrade Succeeds
After HTTP finishes the upgrade, WebSocket turns the same connection into a full-duplex frame channel. The server can push a frame without waiting for the client's next poll. For a cellular module it is a long connection that needs keepalive, that address translation and proxies will tear down, and that must be rebuilt by a state machine after it drops. The handshake is still affected by proxies, certificates, and authentication. After the handshake, text or binary frames carry the service, and control frames handle heartbeat and close. It suits a browser, a gateway, and an interface that needs the server to push. It does not suit a deep-sleep endpoint that turns the radio off for a long time.
This requires load balancers and reverse proxies on the path to allow the upgrade and to hold an idle connection, a keepalive shorter than the operator mapping idle life, and a module that can reconnect on its own after the bearer is rebuilt. A small-memory host should first account for encryption and the send and receive buffers, then decide whether this protocol sits on the module or the host. If the device side already uses a message queue, cellular keepalive belongs in TCP and MQTT, and the browser-to-cloud segment uses WebSocket. A short request that can be cached fits HTTP/REST better. There is no need to hold a long connection for every device.
After the heartbeat outlasts an intermediate timeout, the interface still shows connected while the downlink has already been lost. Reconnects that do not spread out make every terminal perform the upgrade handshake at once when the base station returns, and that fills access and certificate services. Checking only transport encryption, and not the source or the credential scope, lets a page script borrow the channel and send commands to the device. With session affinity misconfigured, the connection lands on a node that has no state and drops at random. Mixing text and binary frames without a type field makes an old device, after a protocol upgrade, fail while parsing a new frame as a string.
What to watch should include whether the upgrade succeeded, lost heartbeats, the reconnect reason, and the size of a single frame, not only whether the process is still there. On a weak network, limit push rate and frame length, and put control commands and display data in different queues, so a large image does not block a switch command. Close should use a close frame and release the socket. A direct power cut leaves a half-open connection on the server and holds a license slot.
