9mobile IoT

Nigeria's fourth-largest telecom operator, formerly Etisalat Nigeria

9mobile Overview

9mobile (formerly Etisalat Nigeria) is Nigeria's fourth-largest operator. Users peaked at 23.5 million in September 2015, about 15.7% of the market. By December 2024 the base was about 3.2 million, about 1.9% of the market, a loss of more than 87%. In July 2024 LH Telecom bought 95% of the shares, but the new shareholder had not yet put in substantial capital, so network modernization and subscriber growth stayed limited. The trouble traces to a USD 1.2 billion loan default in 2016 after the naira was devalued, to scarce spectrum, to only 4,620 km of fiber (MTN has about 39,972 km), and to poor radio quality, including dropped calls and unstable service. Through 2024 it was losing about 245,000 users a month.

9mobile still provides IoT connectivity in Nigeria, but network coverage and stability face challenges, making it suitable for small-scale scenarios that are extremely cost-sensitive.

Development History and Milestones

In 2008, Etisalat, together with local partners, established Etisalat Nigeria and entered the Nigerian market. Rapid growth occurred in the 2010s, reaching 23.5 million users in 2015. In 2016, due to the depreciation of the Naira, it was unable to repay approximately $1.2 billion in loans, falling into a debt dispute with the banking consortium. In 2017, Etisalat withdrew, and the brand was renamed 9mobile, managed by a local trust institution. In 2018, Teleology Holdings won the bid to acquire the company but did not complete the transaction. In July 2024, LH Telecom acquired a 95% stake. The new shareholder promised investment, but by the end of 2024, network upgrades and user recovery progress were limited, and the user base continued to decline.

Core Technical Capabilities

Historical Brands

Once Nigeria's fourth-largest operator, with a quality reputation from the Etisalat years

New Shareholder

LH Telecom bought 95% in 2024, and the restructuring is still underway

4G network

4G is on air in major cities; coverage and quality still need work

Transformation Challenges

Subscribers are leaving, and spending on the network has not kept up

IoT Applications

9mobile still offers IoT connectivity in Nigeria, with 4G in major cities. Subscriber losses and limited network investment leave coverage and stability at risk. It fits only small deployments that are highly sensitive to price and do not need high reliability, and availability should be checked on site.

Position and constraints

  • Earlier brand: It was a significant operator, and some of that user base remains
  • New owner: LH Telecom's purchase leaves room for a restructuring and new investment
  • Constraints: Heavy subscriber losses, scarce spectrum and fiber, and radio quality that still needs work
  • Outlook: Recovery depends on capital from the new shareholder and on whether that plan is carried out
