Mixed-ownership reform in 2017, 625 million IoT connections, and the Yanfei Gewu platform

Overview of China Unicom

China United Network Communications Group Co., Ltd. was established on 19 July 1994 by the former Ministry of Electronics, Ministry of Electric Power, Ministry of Railways, and other parties. It was the company that brought a second public operator into China's telecom market. In 2024 it reported 1.137 billion Big Connectivity users, 290 million 5G package users, 625 million IoT connections, 76 million connected-vehicle connections, and revenue of CNY 389.6 billion. The 2017 mixed-ownership reform brought in Tencent, Baidu, and Alibaba as strategic investors.

Development History and Milestones

1994-2000: China Unicom was founded in July 1994 with initial registered capital of CNY 1.34 billion. In 1995 it built China's second public GSM network, and handset prices fell from CNY 28,000 to CNY 4,000–5,000.

2001-2008: It kept expanding mobile and fixed-line service. In October 2008 it merged with China Netcom and became China United Network Communications Group Co., Ltd.

2009-2016: It received a WCDMA 3G licence, built an LTE FDD 4G network, and started IoT work early.

2017-present: In August 2017 it published the mixed-ownership plan and raised about CNY 61.7 billion for 4G and 5G. It brought in Baidu, Alibaba, and Tencent, set out the Five New strategy, and put the Yanfei Gewu platform in front of hundreds of millions of devices. IoT connections passed 600 million in 2024.
