Djezzy IoT

The second-largest telecom operator in Algeria

Overview of Djezzy

Djezzy is Algeria's second-largest mobile operator, with approximately 15.89 million users by the end of 2023, holding a market share of about 30.86%. The Algerian market is dominated by the top three: Mobilis (around 22.51 million, 43.70%), Djezzy (around 15.89 million, 30.86%), and Ooredoo (around 13.10 million, 25.44%), together accounting for 100%. Djezzy was once under Orascom Telecom, underwent several ownership changes, and is currently associated with Vodafone. Algeria's mobile penetration rate is about 116.5%, indicating a mature market.

Djezzy provides IoT connectivity for Algerian businesses, supporting smart city, industrial IoT, and other scenarios.

Development History and Milestones

In 2001, Orascom Telecom entered Algeria and launched the Djezzy brand. Djezzy was once the largest operator in Algeria. During the 2010s, ownership changed multiple times, involving the Algerian government, VimpelCom (now Veon), Vodafone, and others. Djezzy remains second, competing with Mobilis and Ooredoo. Algeria has a population of about 45 million, and the mobile market is mature.

Radio Layers along the Mediterranean Coast

How voice and data split between 900 and 1800 MHz

The commercial radio technologies Djezzy can be relied on for today are GSM, WCDMA, and LTE. Fifth generation should not be written up as a nationwide IoT bearer. Voice and narrowband data have long used GSM at 900 MHz. Urban WCDMA is mostly at 2100 MHz. The main LTE layer is Band 3 at 1800 MHz, with 2100 MHz added in some urban areas. On the streets of Algiers, Oran, and Constantine, 4G can be the primary bearer. Toward the Atlas Mountains and highways along the northern edge of the Sahara, a device more often falls back to 3G, or is left with only GSM. If firmware disables UMTS, inland sites go offline directly. There is no extra 4G layer waiting to fill the gap. An LTE module from European stock that enables only Band 20 will not match the primary coverage here, because local low-band refarming is not the EU 800 MHz plan. Before ordering, ask the SIM supplier for the bands and PLMN currently allowed to camp, and do not reuse an outdated drive-test table.

Local enterprise connectivity is a contract more than a platform

Enterprise IoT connectivity in Algeria looks more like an operator contract than a global platform that can be switched on by the customer. Djezzy can provide mobile data SIMs, an enterprise APN, and access for city projects, but a data pool, bulk suspend and resume, and a fixed egress IP usually have to be written into the order one item at a time. Billing and customer-service screens are commonly in French and Arabic, so leave a manual step when connecting to a platform at home. Anything related to cross-border roaming depends on that SIM's roaming agreements. Brand history does not prove that a given local SIM already has foreign networks open. Consumer plans are sensitive to long sessions, overnight heartbeats, and unusual traffic. A machine SIM should use an enterprise data product, so it is not throttled under a personal-hotspot policy. If the project requires data to stay in the country, write the egress and the log location into the contract. Do not assume traffic will be sent to a node abroad.

Finish device approval and identity binding before shipment

Algeria registers device serial numbers. An unregistered IMEI may be refused service, and that step has to be finished before shipment. Radio equipment also needs type approval from the regulator. Imported modules, routers, and complete units with cellular usually cannot clear customs in bulk as personal effects. The SIM must be bound to an identity. If the real-name registration documents are incomplete, the SIM can still be issued while data service never comes up. The APN is the name given on the SIM or in the account-opening email. It is not shared across enterprise accounts. Test in three steps: confirm LTE attach and both directions of traffic in central Algiers, take the same SIM to the planned inland town and see whether it falls to 3G, then check that the SMSC and private APN match the contract. In some periods the regulator may require operators to restrict data. Design the link to tolerate an interruption and to cache locally, rather than assuming the public network can always reach a server abroad.

Protocol version and character set on the account form

Enterprise account-opening emails are often short. At a minimum, check the network code allowed to camp, the full APN name, and the SMSC number. If any one of those is missing, do not write SIMs in bulk. Local data contexts are still mostly IPv4. A module that requests only IPv6 can attach and still receive no address. Use the name resolution given on the account form. Do not hard-code a foreign address in firmware. If an alarm SMS contains Arabic or French accents, count the segments in double-byte encoding, or a long message will be cut off. Common outbound ports do not necessarily include arbitrary UDP. During platform integration, start with the TCP ports the contract allows. Do not treat a port used for games or video as reachable by default. Each batch of modules that arrives needs its own serial-number registration. Approval documents for the first batch do not automatically cover hardware that arrives later. When a French attachment conflicts with an English quotation, the locally stamped account form prevails. Fallback results from the port area in Oran cannot be copied straight onto the old city of Constantine. Whether the 3G carriers are still on in each place has to be tested once before the firmware fallback switch is set. Penetration differs a great deal between metal yards at the port and narrow streets in the old city, so record an external antenna and an internal antenna separately. If the enterprise account has not enabled SMS, a normal data context does not mean alarm SMS is available. When customs clearance is split across shipments, append the serial-number list of the later arrivals. Do not submit only the form for the first batch.
