Overview of Freedom Mobile
Freedom Mobile is the fourth-largest mobile carrier in Canada and is currently owned by Quebecor through its subsidiary Vidéotron. Freedom Mobile was formerly known as Wind Mobile and was renamed Freedom Mobile in 2016. In April 2023, following Rogers' acquisition of Shaw, it was sold to Quebecor for CAD 2.85 billion. Freedom covers major cities in Ontario, Alberta, and British Columbia and is an important competitive force breaking the monopoly of the 'Big Three'—Rogers, Bell, and Telus in Canada.
Freedom Mobile is known for its cost-effectiveness and competitive pricing. From 2015 to 2020, its number of users grew by more than 105%, and its market share increased from 3.2% to 5.8%. After being acquired by Quebecor, Freedom, under regulatory commitments, froze existing customer rates, increased data capacity, and expanded 5G services and nationwide roaming, continuing to offer Canadian consumers more choices.

Development History and Milestones
Formerly known as Wind Mobile, Freedom Mobile was founded by Egypt's Orascom Telecom in 2008. It was Canada's first new operator to use AWS spectrum, aimed at breaking the Big Three monopoly. In 2014, Wind was acquired by Shaw Communications and renamed Freedom Mobile in 2016. Shaw invested heavily to expand the network, and Freedom's user base grew by over 105% between 2015 and 2020, from about 970,000 to approximately 2 million.
In 2022, Rogers announced the acquisition of Shaw for CAD 26 billion, and the Canadian Competition Bureau required the divestiture of Freedom Mobile to maintain market competition. Rogers reached an agreement with Quebecor to sell Freedom to Quebecor for CAD 2.85 billion. The transaction was completed in April 2023. Quebecor committed to freezing existing customer rates for 5 years, increasing data capacity by 10%, and promoting competitive pricing nationwide. After the acquisition, Vidéotron's mobile users rose from about 2 million to over 4 million, making it a significant fourth-largest operator in Canada.

Freedom Mobile and Vidéotron are both under Quebecor, forming a "Quebec (Vidéotron) + West (Freedom)" dual-regional layout. They share back-end systems, roaming agreements, and purchasing capabilities, but operate independently under their own brands. Vidéotron has a strong cable + wireless integrated business in Quebec, while Freedom provides mobile services in Ontario, Alberta, and BC. After the merger, Quebecor's total mobile user base exceeds 4 million, becoming an influential fourth player in the Canadian telecom market.
