Globacom IoT

Nigerian operator, trading as Glo

Overview of Globacom

Globacom (brand Glo) is a Nigerian operator founded by Mike Adenuga. In September 2024 the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) tightened the definition of an active user: revenue in the past 90 days and completed NIN verification. Under that rule Globacom's active base fell from about 62.1 million in March 2024 to about 19.1 million, about 13% of the market, third in Nigeria behind MTN (about 78 million) and Airtel (about 53.7 million). Most of the drop is inactive and unverified lines removed from the count. Globacom has about 4,620 km of fiber, against about 39,972 km for MTN, and network investment and coverage lag those two operators.

Globacom provides mobile IoT connectivity for Nigerian enterprises and has 4G coverage in major cities.

Development History and Milestones

Globacom opened in 2003 as Nigeria's second GSM operator; MTN had entered in 2001. Glo grew quickly in the 2000s on low prices. In the 2010s it faced MTN and Airtel with less spent on the network. After Etisalat (later 9mobile) hit a debt crisis in 2016, Glo was expected to pick up share, but its own coverage and quality limited that. When the NCC changed the active-user count in 2024, inactive lines were removed and the active base fell sharply, which points to the same network and service problems.

IoT Applications

Globacom offers mobile IoT connectivity in Nigeria, with 4G in major cities. It fits price-sensitive smaller businesses and agricultural sensors. Spending and coverage are behind MTN and Airtel, so a large deployment needs a check of coverage and stability first.
