Indosat Ooredoo IoT

Indonesia's second-largest operator, with more than 100 million users after the merger

Overview of Indosat Ooredoo

Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison (referred to as Indosat or IOH) is Indonesia's second-largest mobile operator, formed in 2022 through the merger of the original Indosat Ooredoo and Hutchison 3 Indonesia. After the merger, both networks and user bases were integrated, creating a strong competitor to Telkomsel. Indosat holds approximately 21% of the mobile market in Indonesia, with over 100 million users.

In the field of the Internet of Things (IoT), Indosat leverages the enhanced network coverage and rapid expansion of 4G base stations (up 20.8% YoY in Q1 2024) resulting from the merger to provide IoT connectivity services for smart cities, enterprise digitalization, and logistics tracking scenarios. Its ARPU continues to grow (up 10.5% YoY in H1 2024), reflecting increased contribution from high-value users and IoT business.

Development History and Milestones

Indosat was formerly the Indonesian International Telegraph and Telephone Company established in 1967, initially focusing on international communications. It entered the mobile market in the 1990s, becoming one of Indonesia's main GSM operators. In 2012, Qatar's Ooredoo Group acquired a majority stake in Indosat, renaming it Indosat Ooredoo. In January 2022, Indosat Ooredoo merged with Hutchison 3 Indonesia (3 Indonesia), controlled by Li Ka-shing, forming Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison, becoming the second largest mobile operator in Indonesia.

After the merger, Indosat accelerated 4G network construction, reaching 184,000 4G base stations in Q1 2024, increasing to 188,000 in H1. H1 2024 saw approximately 900,000 new users. Data traffic continued growing, reflecting strong demand from IoT and mobile internet. ARPU growth indicates increased contribution from high-value users and IoT connections.
