Development History and Milestones
The history of Telcel is closely linked to the development of Mexico's telecommunications industry. América Móvil's predecessor was the telecommunications business of Grupo Carso, which rose during Mexico's telecom reforms in the 1990s. In 1990, Telcel obtained a mobile operator license and began building an analog cellular network. In the late 1990s, Telcel rapidly expanded alongside the privatization and competitive opening of Mexico's telecom sector.
In 2000, América Móvil was spun off from Telmex (Mexico Telecom), focusing on mobile services. Telcel became América Móvil's flagship brand in Mexico. In the 2000s, Telcel dominated the Mexican market and, along with América Móvil, acquired operators in multiple Latin American countries, forming a multinational telecom empire. In the 2010s, Telcel deployed 4G LTE and in the 2020s advanced 5G. In 2024, Telcel added approximately 780,000 mobile users, achieved mobile revenue of about 24 billion Mexican pesos, and EBITDA maintained growth.
