Development History and Milestones
Telefonica was founded in Spain in 1924, originally as the Spanish National Telephone Company (Compañía Telefónica Nacional de España). Starting in the 1990s, it began large-scale expansion into Latin America, becoming the largest telecom operator in the region through the acquisition of operators in Brazil, Argentina, Mexico, and other countries. In 2005, it acquired the UK's O2, entering the European markets including the UK and Germany, establishing a dual-engine pattern of Europe + Latin America.
In terms of IoT development, Telefonica launched the Kite IoT connection management platform in 2013, becoming one of the first operators in Europe to provide globally unified IoT connection management. In 2016, the Telefonica Tech division was established, integrating IoT with cloud computing, cybersecurity, and big data. In 2020, it announced the spin-off of its connected vehicle SIM management business and established an independent Connected Vehicle division, focusing on digitalization in the automotive industry. In 2022, Telefonica Tech's revenue exceeded €1.5 billion, becoming a major digital service provider in Europe.
In-depth Analysis of the Kite Platform
Kite is an IoT connection management platform independently developed by Telefonica. Through a unified API and console, enterprises can manage all IoT SIM cards distributed across Telefonica's networks in Europe and Latin America. The Kite platform supports real-time viewing of each SIM card's connection status, data usage, and location information, and allows setting automated operation rules (such as over-usage alerts, automatic deactivation, etc.). The platform provides a complete RESTful API, making it easy for enterprises to integrate IoT connection management into their own business systems.
