Telstra IoT

Australia's largest operator, with nationwide mobile coverage

Telstra Overview

Telstra is Australia's largest integrated operator, based in Melbourne. The line of business goes back to the Postmaster-General's Department in 1901, more than 120 years of telecom service. Telstra has the country's widest mobile coverage, about 99.7% of the population, and it leads the NBN (National Broadband Network) wholesale market. It is a core builder of Australia's telecom infrastructure.

For IoT, Telstra connects agriculture, mining, logistics, and smart cities. The platform manages large numbers of devices and their data. After buying Digicel Pacific in 2022, Telstra also operates in Fiji, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Tonga, Vanuatu, and Nauru, which makes it the most widely present telecom group in Oceania.

Development History and Milestones

After the Australian Federation was formed in 1901, the Postmaster-General's Department ran post and telecom together. In 1991, OTC merged with that department's telecom division, and the company was renamed Telstra in 1993. Telstra listed on the ASX in 1997, and the government sold down its stake over time. After the T3 privatization in 2006, Telstra was fully listed. In 2011 it joined the NBN build, transferred its fixed-line assets to NBN Co, and became NBN's largest wholesale customer. It launched the 4GX network in 2015 and commercial 5G in 2019. In 2022 it bought Digicel Pacific for up to USD 1.85 billion, taking mobile operations in six Pacific countries that serve more than 10 million people.
