Development History and Milestones
Vinaphone was launched in June 1996 as a GSM operator, initially with only 8,000 users, making it Vietnam's first fully self-built mobile network. In 1999, it became the nation's first mobile network to cover all provinces and cities; in November 2002, users exceeded 1 million; in 2006, it was the first to cover all districts nationwide (including remote mountainous areas and islands); and in 2009, it became the first operator in Vietnam to commercially launch 3G. VNPT Group was established on April 30, 1995, restructured into a group model in 2006, and converted into a wholly state-owned limited liability company in 2010.
In 2024, VNPT Vinaphone deployed 5G networks in 63 provinces and cities nationwide. By early 2025, 5G users reached 3 million, with plans to triple 5G coverage in 2025. In 2024, VNPT's pre-tax profit exceeded $239 million. By mid-2025, Vinaphone will be integrated into the VNPT Group for unified operations, further strengthening fixed-mobile convergence.
