Overview of Vini
Vini is the main operator in French Polynesia (Tahiti). On 20 April 2013 it was formed from three state-owned companies: Tikiphone (mobile), Tahiti Nui Satellite (TNS, satellite), and Mana (internet). Tikiphone launched 2G on Tahiti in 1995. In 2009 French Polynesia became the third country in the South Pacific, after Australia and New Zealand, to offer commercial 3G. Before the merger, Tikiphone had about 227,600 users (end of 2012).
Vini currently covers 92% of the population of French Polynesia, with 4G/5G deployed in Tahiti, the Society Islands, Tuamotu, Marquesas, the Southern Islands, and other outer islands. It provides mobile, fiber and 4G/5G broadband, and fixed-line services. In the fixed-line and internet sectors, Vini maintains a monopoly due to high investment costs and low profitability; the mobile market has become a dual-operator competition since Vodafone entered in June 2013 through Pacific Mobile Telecom.
