Contactless payment

Automatic deduction payment

Definition

Contactless payment (Contactless Payment, automatic deduction payment) is a payment method based on license plate recognition, ETC, RFID and other technologies linked to a payment account. Users pre-bind their license plate, ETC device, etc. with accounts such as Alipay, WeChat, bank cards, UnionPay, etc. When the vehicle leaves or passes a toll station, the system automatically recognizes and completes the deduction, without the need to stop, scan a code, or swipe a card, providing a "lift the barrier and go" convenient experience.

Contactless payment must ensure payment security and transaction accuracy, involving license plate recognition accuracy, account balance verification, interception of abnormal transactions, etc. It interfaces with acquiring systems and clearing and settlement systems to achieve real-time fund transfer.

Technical Features

Contactless payment relies on devices such as barriers, geomagnetic sensors, cameras, ETC antennas, etc., to collect entry/exit and traffic data, which is then uploaded in real time to a cloud platform via IoT SIM cards. The cloud platform interfaces with payment institutions' APIs to complete authentication, deduction, and reconciliation. In parking lot scenarios, it is usually integrated with systems like parking guidance, reverse car finding, and electronic invoicing.

Use Cases

Contactless payment is widely used in smart parking, highway ETC, gas stations, charging stations, car washes, and other scenarios. Parking lot barriers, geomagnetic sensors, and cameras upload entry and exit data to the cloud platform through IoT SIM cards and interface with the payment system to complete automatic settlement. SimtoLink provides stable network support and a dedicated APN for contactless payment scenarios to ensure real-time transmission of transaction data and fund security.

How the read, the charge, and the barrier receipt correspond

In contactless payment the IoT SIM carries the recognition result and the device state for one passage. It does not carry the clearing instruction inside a card scheme. A plate, an ETC tag, or a radio tag is read locally in the lane, matched to an account that is already bound, and the acquirer or parking platform decides the charge. The barrier raise or the refusal is then written back to the lane controller. The three steps have to be strung on one passage id: which read, which charge, which barrier movement. If cellular breaks after the read and before the receipt, the barrier may already be up while the platform has no charge, or the platform has charged and the barrier has not moved. Watching only “the camera is online” does not show that mismatch.

The condition is a local queue in the lane equipment, so that after cellular returns it can report in passage order, not only the vehicle currently on the loop. The camera, the barrier, and the payment platform need one clock, or a night catch-up is matched to the wrong shift. Insufficient balance, a lapsed contactless agreement, and low recognition confidence need an explicit fallback: attendant, scan-to-pay, or refuse to raise. Do not pass by default. The SIM should be restricted to the parking or acquiring platform. Remote desktop on the lane computer must not share priority with the transaction message. Where one barrier has several cameras, or the site is nested, name which recognition point creates the passage id, so the same vehicle is not charged twice. After a plate camera is replaced, bind the SIM identity and the lane id again. Do not drop the old camera’s unfinished queue.

A common error is to treat a successful barrier raise as a successful charge. The barrier relay is a local electrical signal. The charge is a platform transaction. Record them separately. Another error is a terminal that resubmits the same passage on a weak link, with no idempotency on the platform, so several charges appear. Rain or fog lowers recognition confidence and the system still passes contactlessly, then requests payment from the wrong account on the wrong plate. If the reconciliation file is cut on the calendar day and the lane is cut on the attendant’s shift, a passage across midnight exists on one side and not the other. Acceptance should include a successful read with a charge timeout, a successful charge with a lost barrier command, and two vehicles with the same plate following each other, and check that each has only one passage id. The acceptance system on the cashier side is described under acquiring system. The lane equipment is described under barrier gate.

Each passage keeps a reference to the recognition image or the confidence, the charge retrieval reference, and the barrier receipt. If any of the three is missing, the passage goes to a manual review queue. It is not judged successful automatically. Tailgating and a vehicle read from the neighboring lane should be markable locally, and a marked record should not be charged automatically. Write the fallback for a lapsed contactless agreement into the lane controller. A network timeout must not raise the barrier by default. Assign a passage that crosses midnight by its passage id, not by the file’s creation time, which would split one passage across two days. On the first day after a camera replacement, sample plates against accounts, so a changed install angle does not create a systematic misread. Refunds and reversals use the original passage id. Customer service should not “find a transaction that looks close in time.” A reconciliation difference should land on a specific lane and SIM identity. A site total alone cannot schedule a repair. Protection against a repeated submit has to exist on both the platform and the lane. If only one side has it, the other still treats a retry as a new passage.

After the lane controller restarts, report unfinished passages before raising the barrier for a new vehicle. A vehicle on the loop during the restart goes to the attendant lane. Do not create a contactless order automatically. Keep an image index for a read below the confidence threshold so it can be reviewed, and do not charge it directly. Close the site day on passage ids. When that does not match the payment institution, list the ids, not only the amount difference. For a difference that has an amount and no id, go back to the lane log and restore the id before deciding on a refund.
