1. Scenario overview
An IoT SIM customer hits critical moments across the lifecycle: activation succeeds, data is running out, the line is suspended, payment succeeds, a renewal is due, a ticket is answered. If each module talks to the SMS gateway on its own, templates drift, customers get the same message twice, and nobody can see whether it landed. Notifications on the SimtoLink IoT Cloud Platform run through one message center. A business event enters the bus. A policy engine picks the channel, the template, the send time, and the frequency cap, then calls SMS, email, an in-app message, a WeChat official-account template, or an app push.
It is wired into data usage alerts, customer orders, and user segments and tags. Operations can run a campaign for a chosen segment, and still honor opt-out and quiet hours, such as no messages at night. The design follows CMP and internet messaging practice: observable, able to fall back, and able to retry.
2. Core capabilities
Templates and variables
Templates for every channel are filed in one place. SMS and WeChat in particular need operator or platform review. Placeholders map to business fields. Multi-language templates cover markets outside China.
Routing and fallback
If the primary channel fails, traffic moves to a backup. Marketing messages can wait in a queue when a channel is congested. With webhooks and event subscriptions, a customer can keep its own notification system.
Subscription and compliance
Customers can turn marketing and service messages on or off. Consent time and source are stored, which is what the Personal Information Protection Law and telecom rules expect.
Campaigns
Combine a segment with plan promotions and purchase limits to send a coupon or a campaign link. Copy can be A/B tested.
3. How it sits with self-service
The customer self-service portal includes the message center, so a customer can read past notices and clear pending items. That takes repeat questions off the support desk.
4. Where teams use it
- Usage crosses a threshold: At 80% and 100% of the data allowance, SMS and a WeChat template go out so the customer can renew before the line stops. That cuts the tickets and complaints that follow a suspension.
- Order status stays visible: Payment success, activation complete, and the monthly bill each send an in-app message and an email. Customers can see that the payment went through and whether the SIM is live.
- Campaigns reach the right people: A segment tagged “not renewed in the last 30 days” gets a renewal coupon. A/B tests compare copy and click-through, and the campaign keeps getting tighter.
5. How to put it in place
Keep transactional notices (verification codes, payment results) and marketing notices on separate channels and templates. Watch send volume and cost. Confirm the quota with the channel provider before a large promotion.
6. What changes in daily operations
One notification path makes the service visible and lifts renewal conversion, and frequency caps plus opt-out cut complaint risk. The message center replaces a separate SMS gateway in every module, which saves channel cost and keeps templates filed in one compliance record. Delivery data — arrival rate and click rate — gives operations a number to iterate on.
