1. Scenario overview
If an open API is misused, or someone hammers it, the whole platform can go down, and the load on the downstream operator API gateway grows with it. Quotas and rate limits on the SimtoLink IoT Cloud Platform sit at the gateway and limit traffic on several dimensions: global, tenant, app, IP, and a single API. A daily or monthly quota caps calls that consume a lot, such as a bulk export. With multi-tenant management, tenants can sit on different SLA tiers.
Return 429 and a Retry-After header. The client should retry with exponential backoff. For a bulk job, point people at the async job API instead of polling in a loop.
2. Core capabilities
How you set it
Set the threshold in the console. Queries can have a higher QPS than writes. For a promotion you can raise a limit for a while and give it an expiry.
Commercial tiers
Basic, Enterprise, and Flagship come with different quotas, tied to the SLA and technical support plan.
Break and step down
If a caller stays over the limit, alert them and suggest they change how they call. In an extreme case, one app can be limited for a while so the platform stays up.
Fair use
One tenant should not take most of the connections and the CPU. Sandbox and call logs show which APIs are hot.
3. Typical use cases
- A promotion that spikes orders: During an e-commerce promotion, IoT SIM orders jump. Raise the QPS on the core query APIs for a while, and keep the cap on writes, so a burst does not take the platform down.
- Fair use across tenants: Many companies share the same platform. Each tenant has its own quota bucket, so one large customer’s batch job cannot use up the connections, and smaller tenants still get a timely response.
- A quota that matches the commercial tier: Basic, Enterprise, and Flagship allow different call volumes. The quota is part of the price, and it is a reason to move up a tier.
4. Implementation notes
Limit on the client as well, and combine requests where you can. Use the official async API for a batch. When you are limited, do not retry in a tight loop. Honor Retry-After.
5. What you gain
Quotas and rate limits on the SimtoLink IoT Cloud Platform keep a shared multi-tenant platform stable and fair, and they give the commercial offer a clear tier. Fine limits keep the platform available in a burst. Tiers tie API capacity to price, which is a reason to move up. An alert as you near the cap lets a customer change how they call before a limit becomes an outage.
