1. Motivation and benefits
Tens of thousands of sensors sampled at 1Hz can produce hundreds of millions of points a year. Cloud storage, indexing, and query cost then rise in a straight line, while most business reports only need min, max, average, and quantiles at minute or hour grain. Edge pre-aggregation builds those statistical buckets on the gateway or an on-site industrial PC over a sliding window, and uploads only the aggregate. High-resolution samples can stay in a short local circular buffer, or go up as a slice when an alert fires or a work order opens: less bandwidth in ordinary operation, the detail when an incident happens. The SimtoLink Device Management Platform defines the aggregation window, alignment policy, tag dimensions, and upload topic in one place, and connects to hot-cold time-series tiering so the cloud stores buckets that are already aligned.
2. Algorithms and resource constraints
For quantiles, approximate structures such as t-digest or HdrHistogram keep memory bounded. Windows align on event time and accept a configurable allowed lateness so out-of-order points are handled. Estimate CPU and flash write amplification so the aggregation itself does not drag down real-time control.
3. With the streaming rules engine
A compound condition, such as temperature staying above a threshold for 5 minutes, can leave the streaming rules engine as an intermediate stream and then enter the aggregation operator. Each stage keeps a clear job.
4. Consistency and the contract
Cloud and edge must describe bucket fields with the same schema version. A change in what a field means goes through review. Replay checks compare a fresh edge calculation with what the cloud stored.
5. Failures and disconnection
While the link is down, persist aggregation state and the watermark, then resume commits after recovery. If the clock steps backward, protect monotonicity. Use offline buffering so that state is not lost.
6. Cost and TCO
Bytes you no longer upload, and the cloud storage you no longer pay for, go into the fleet TCO model so leadership sees a quantified return.
7. Quality and alerts
Aggregation latency, the rate of lost buckets, and the error found when spot-checking against raw points belong in data quality monitoring. If those signals look wrong, fall back to uploading raw samples.
8. Summary
Edge pre-aggregation is how you compute at the edge and store in the cloud, and it still has to handle out-of-order data, resource limits, and a consistent contract. SimtoLink supplies the configuration, monitoring, replay checks, and the link into data quality. Further reading: data quality monitoring and link telemetry. Appendix: engineering rollout and ongoing operations
Taking edge pre-aggregation from a pilot into production means putting three operating habits in place together. Run load tests and chaos exercises on a staging or pilot batch that mirrors production, and treat connection storms, a full disk, certificate rotation, and cross-region failure as standing drills whose results become a checklist you can reuse at acceptance. Write monitoring metrics, alert thresholds, on-call escalation, and audit retention into change control, so troubleshooting does not depend on whoever happens to remember, and so a change to a window or alignment setting can be traced and rolled back. Once a quarter, have engineering, operations, security, and data review whether the metrics still describe the business risk, and tie the follow-ups to tickets and the release calendar. SimtoLink Device Management Platform treats observability, orchestration, and audit as one practice: the console, open APIs, and exports should be run as living operations assets.
