Product overview and where it fits
The SimtoLink digital barometric pressure sensor is for weather IoT. The measurement and the link sit on an automotive-grade ASIC, and the reading stays predictable across a wide temperature, a wide pressure, and electromagnetic noise. Altitude correction and the sea-level reduction have to use one rule, and they are calibrated with the temperature coefficients, or the value cannot feed a numerical forecast or be compared with an altimeter. Terminals pull out, key chips have a watchdog and a redundant check, and signed firmware can roll back, so a volume shipment can still be maintained from afar.
Absolute pressure and gauge pressure, in hPa. This sensor measures absolute pressure, the total pressure against vacuum. In weather work that is station pressure, usually shown in hPa. 1 hPa equals 1 mbar, and both equal 100 Pa. Gauge pressure is the difference from local air pressure, used on pipes, vessels, and cleanroom differentials. If the job needs gauge or differential pressure, pick a gauge or differential transmitter and name the reference port. On the register map, keep the quantity and the unit straight so absolute and gauge are not read as the same thing.
The usual interfaces are 4–20 mA, RS485, and an optional cellular uplink, so the sensor can meet SCADA, an energy system, or an IoT platform. SimtoLink supplies a southbound point list and northbound MQTT or HTTP push examples, which shortens the joint test. Volume jobs can add silkscreen, a set harness length, a protocol map, and a calibration certificate.
Reliability on site
For electrical safety and EMC, the sensor has passed the relevant salt-spray and vibration type tests. Ports include surge and reverse-polarity protection. Reinforced grounding and a partitioned layout reduce ground loops and common-mode noise. Outdoor or coastal sites can take a higher ingress rating and a corrosion-resistant coating.
Parameters can be loaded in batches, thresholds can be set, and the unit can keep event video or waveform records, depending on the model. Configuration and firmware go out by OTA. On site, close acceptance in three steps: a power-on self-test, clock sync on the link, and a spot check of samples. For metering or safety duty, SimtoLink helps submit the unit to a third-party metrology institute and supplies the type-test file.
Key hardware parameters
The figures below are the typical build of this sensor, for selection and for the technical clauses in a bid. A wider range, redundant power, or an intrinsically safe variant is available from SimtoLink with the Hardware Specification and the Installation and Commissioning Guide. Order codes in the family can differ slightly; the nameplate and the papers shipped with the unit govern.
| Parameter | Specification | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Measured quantity | Barometric pressure (absolute) | Against vacuum; not gauge or differential, and not the same basis as a pipe gauge transmitter |
| Pressure range (typical) | 300~1100 hPa | Plateau to sea level; a wider range follows the order code |
| Unit | hPa | 1 hPa = 100 Pa; the number matches mbar |
| Accuracy (typical) | ±1 hPa | Full-range and long-term figures follow the Hardware Specification |
| Resolution (typical) | 0.01 hPa | Can change with the sensing element and the firmware |
| Temperature measurement (optional) | −40 to 85 °C (built-in) | For pressure compensation and quality checks; some builds omit it |
| Supply | PoE / DC 12–24 V | Isolation optional |
| Interfaces | 4–20 mA + RS485; 4G/NB optional | Modbus and similar maps can be scaled in hPa |
| Ingress | IP54 | Outdoor build can be IP67 |
| Consumption | <2 W | Cellular builds draw more; the nameplate governs |
Typical deployments
Three layouts that show up often enough to use in a scheme review and a payback check:
Municipal and utilities
Scattered points and outdoor cabinets. Wide temperature and lightning protection suit water, gas, and street lighting, where the link is long and the delay has to stay short.
Campuses and buildings
The sensor feeds campus energy management or building controls for sub-metering, alarms, and linked actions, so manual reads and inspection rounds cost less.
Plant and energy sites
On a line or in a power room it can meet MES or EMS and send key process values or energy data from the edge.
Installation, grounding, and upkeep
- Before applying power, confirm the supply range and polarity. If there is any doubt, measure bus voltage and breaker capacity with a multimeter.
- Run the communications cable as shielded twisted pair, grounded at one end only, and do not lash it to high-power cables over a long route.
- For the first go-live, prove read and write in both directions and the threshold triggers against the platform in the lab, then move the sensor to site.
- Outdoors, give drainage and ventilation first priority, inspect the sealing faces on a regular round, and keep the lightning earth resistance inside the local code.
- In continuous service, spot-check samples and archive logs every 12 months.
Ordering, documents, and support
SimtoLink provides the hardware specification, an outline drawing, a wiring table, and a sample project. Volume orders can include a sample review and inspection at the factory. Warranty and calibration follow the contract and the documents that ship with the sensor.
Where the reading is used
Digital air pressure is a base quantity for weather typing, height calculation, and holding a UAV altitude. It is usually sited with temperature, humidity, and wind. The cases below ask for different sample rates, sealing, and calibration intervals, by altitude and by industry.
Plateau and mountain weather stations
Pressure is observed more densely where the altitude gradient and the valley circulation are strong, which helps pick out terrain troughs, downslope wind, and föhn. Station metadata records altitude, sensor height, and the surface under the site, so a numerical model can assimilate the reading and a later correction can be applied. Short-range warnings then catch mesoscale systems more often.
Civil and general-aviation airfields
The sensor is a live pressure source for QNH, QFE, and the altimeter setting, and it is compared with a regional reference for drift and steps. A dual set with automatic switchover keeps maintenance off the runway. The link can be read at once by the tower and by airline dispatch.
Furnaces and cleanroom differentials
Absolute air pressure and the cleanroom micro-pressure gradient are watched together, and they drive fresh air, exhaust VFD speed, and fire dampers. Isolated ports and shielded cable stop inverter common-mode noise from dragging the reading, so the differential interlock still holds in a harsh EMC zone.
Geohazard and landslide warning
Rain, tilt, soil moisture, and GNSS displacement are sampled at the same point and at a high rate, so a sharp pressure change that comes with strong convection or a front can be seen in time to move people and close a road. Feature extraction at the edge cuts the uplink bandwidth.
