What the gateway is for

The unit sits between a Siemens PLC and the Modbus RTU/TCP meters and drives already on the line. Cyclic I/O and alarm bits stay mapped, which is what a retrofit needs when a new controller has to live with the old instruments.

SimtoLink ships a GSDML and point-table import tool, plus a wiring note for the two isolated ports, and the gateway can capture packets while a fault is chased. Volume builds can add a DIN-rail supply, redundant Ethernet, and a wide-temperature coating.

How it holds up on site

Salt-spray and vibration type-test items are already on the record. Each port has surge and reverse-polarity protection, and the board is grounded in zones so a ground loop or a common-mode spike is less likely to drop the link. Outdoor and coastal cabinets can be ordered with a higher ingress rating and a corrosion-resistant coating.

Parameters load in a batch, thresholds can raise events, and selected models store an event clip or a waveform. Configuration and firmware go out over OTA. Accept the gateway in three checks: power-on self-test, time sync on the link, and a sample of live values. Where the data is used for metering or safety, SimtoLink helps with a third-party metrology submission and the type-test file.

Hardware figures

Figures below are for the typical order, for selection and for a bid schedule. For a wider range, a redundant supply, or an intrinsically safe explosion-proof variant, ask SimtoLink for the hardware specification and the installation guide. Order codes in this family can differ in small ways; the nameplate and the papers in the box decide.

Where the gateway is dropped in

Three jobs this unit is usually given, so the map can be checked before the order is placed.

Automotive and parts lines

An S7/PN controller reads Modbus tightening spindles, temperature and humidity, and energy meters through one gateway, so a second cable run is not pulled.

Water and environmental stations

The PLC stays on PROFINET and the field analyzers stay on Modbus. The gateway maps the registers in bulk and applies the scale.

Conveyors and sortation

Barcode readers and scales on Modbus join the PROFINET master, so the scan trigger and the motor interlock keep their sequence.

Install, ground, and keep it

  • Check the supply range and polarity before power is applied. If the cabinet feed is uncertain, measure the bus voltage and confirm the breaker rating.
  • Run the serial leads as shielded twisted pair, ground the shield at one end, and keep them off long runs of high-power cable.
  • Prove read, write, and a threshold trip against the host in the lab before the gateway moves to the line.
  • Outdoors, give the enclosure a way for water to leave and air to move, inspect the gasket on a schedule, and keep the lightning earth inside the local code.
  • Every 6 months, pull a sample of points and archive the log.

Order, documents, and support

SimtoLink supplies the hardware specification, outline drawing, wiring table, and a sample project. Volume orders can include a sample review and a factory inspection. Warranty and calibration follow the contract and the papers shipped with the unit.
