Product overview and engineering role

The SimtoLink soil temperature chain probe is field sensing hardware for a buried soil-profile point. Ratings on this page are there so a buyer can close a selection, cite them in a tender, and spot-check the chain after it is in the ground. Sensing and the uplink share a dual-core lockstep MCU, so the profile stays predictable across wide temperature, wide supply voltage, and electromagnetic interference. Terminals pull out, critical chips carry a watchdog and a redundant check, and the firmware that matters is signed and can roll back, which is what a volume shipment and later remote service need.

This model leaves the factory with a USB-C debug port and a standard industrial connector, ready to sit on an existing SCADA, energy-management, or IoT platform. Southbound point-list templates and northbound MQTT and HTTP push examples shorten the joint debug. Volume orders can add enclosure silkscreen, a set harness length, protocol mapping, and a calibration certificate.

Reliability and field fit

Salt-spray and vibration type tests cover the electrical-safety and EMC items that apply to this probe. Ports are protected against surge and reversed polarity. Reinforced grounding and a partitioned layout cut ground-loop and common-mode risk. Outdoor or coastal burial can take a higher ingress rating and a corrosion-resistant coating.

Parameters can be loaded in bulk, thresholds can be set, and models that include it can store event video or a waveform. Configuration and firmware go out over the air. Acceptance on site is a power-on self-test, time sync on the communications link, and a sample spot check. For metering or safety use, SimtoLink helps with a submission to a third-party metrology institute and supplies the type-test file.

Key hardware parameters

The table is a typical build of this temperature chain, for selection and for a technical clause in a tender. A wider range, redundant power, or an intrinsically safe version is quoted separately; ask SimtoLink for the hardware specification and the installation and commissioning guide. Order codes in the family can differ slightly. The nameplate and the papers shipped with the chain govern.

Typical applications

Four deployments this chain is usually bought for, so a design and a return case can be written against them:

Permafrost and cold-region works

A multi-depth ground-temperature chain tracks how the freeze-thaw boundary moves, and feeds seasonal deformation warnings for roads, pipelines, and wind-turbine foundations.

Geothermal loops and energy piles

Temperature around a buried-pipe heat exchanger shows thermal breakthrough and how the loop should be run, so the heat-pump COP can be tuned.

Root-zone heat

Profile temperature is read with soil moisture and EC, to time spring sowing, mulch, and frost cover, and to cut cold injury at the seedling stage.

Research and long-term ecological stations

The soil temperature chain probe feeds a flux tower and a watershed network with profile data that a model can be checked against.

Installation, grounding, and maintenance

  • Confirm supply range and polarity before the chain is powered. If the drawing is unclear, measure bus voltage and breaker rating with a multimeter.
  • Run the uplink on shielded twisted pair, ground the shield at one end, and do not lay it for a long run bundled with high-power cable.
  • Before the probe is buried, prove bidirectional read and write and a threshold trip against the platform in the lab.
  • An outdoor head needs a drain path and a way to breathe. Recheck the seal face on rounds. Lightning-protection earth resistance has to meet the local code.
  • On a chain that stays in the ground, take a sample spot check and archive the logs every 24 months.

Ordering, documentation, and support

SimtoLink can supply the hardware specification, outline drawings, a wiring table, and an example project for this probe. Volume orders can include a sample review and inspection at the factory. Warranty and calibration follow the contract and the papers packed with the chain.
