Smart Shopping District Solution

Footfall insight, in-mall guidance, and member operations for digital retail districts

Solution Overview

The Ministry of Commerce counts more than 6,000 shopping centers in China of 10,000 square meters or larger, with more than 500 million square meters of commercial floor area. District operators still struggle to measure footfall, to explain why some units stay cold while others run hot, to reach members, to make parking tolerable, and to judge whether a campaign worked. Online retail has made that gap harder to ignore. This solution combines IoT sensing, big data, and artificial intelligence for shopping centers, high streets, and outlets: footfall insight, in-mall guidance, member operations, and parking.

Wi-Fi probes, Bluetooth beacons, video AI, and turnstiles feed counts of people entering, dwell time, paths, and heat. Tenants use that picture, together with sales, to adjust unit mix, judge an event, and target offers. Members are recognized without an extra step at the till, points post automatically, coupons go out, and indoor navigation shortens the walk. Parking guidance, find-my-car, and plate-based payment cut the time spent looking for a car and waiting to leave.

What Operators See Today

  • Footfall is still counted by hand, and the numbers are unreliable
  • Cold units sit empty, while hot units argue over rent
  • More than 60% of members are inactive, and reaching them is expensive
  • Finding a car takes more than 15 minutes on average

What Changes

Footfall accuracy rises above 95%. Unit-mix changes lift conversion in cold zones by 20%. Member repeat purchase rises 30%. Time to leave the car park falls 70%. Leading shopping centers report an annualized ROI above 25%.

Core Capabilities

From the people walking in to the decisions that follow

Footfall and Heat Maps

Video AI, Wi-Fi probes, and Bluetooth beacons are read together for entries, floor and zone split, dwell time, and paths. The heat map shows where people actually gather, which is the basis for moving units and placing events.

Indoor Navigation and Guidance

Bluetooth beacons or UWB place the shopper on the map, with routes to stores, restrooms, and lifts. Offers follow stated preferences. AR navigation over the live view shortens the search for a shop.

Members and Offers

Members are recognized on arrival, points post without an extra till step, and coupons are issued. Purchase and behavior data build a profile so offers can differ by person. Tiers, benefits, and the points store run in the same program.

Parking

Guidance screens and the app or mini program show where spaces are free. Plate recognition, plate-based payment, and reserved bays are included. Find-my-car works from a plate number or a photo, so the walk back to the car is shorter and leaving is simpler.

Typical Use Cases

Shopping Centers

Footfall, members, and parking in one mall operation

High Streets

Street footfall, merchant coordination, and events

Outlets

Discount retail, repeat purchase, and cross-border visitors

Dining Streets

Queue calls, table turns, and delivery orders

How the System Connects

Sensing: Cameras support AI counts and behavior analysis. Wi-Fi probes collect MAC addresses and remove duplicates. Bluetooth beacons use iBeacon or Eddystone. Turnstiles and access points count entries and exits. Devices and data land on the IoT platform.

One view of the visit: Footfall from several sources has to be deduplicated, attributed, and aligned in time and place. POS, membership, and parking then join that record so operations and the customer view sit on the same data.

Privacy: Wi-Fi and MAC collection must be anonymized. Facial recognition needs consent and must follow the applicable rules. Storage and use of personal data must meet personal-information protection requirements.
