BT Group IoT

The UK's largest integrated operator, with fixed, mobile, and enterprise services

Overview of BT Group

BT Group plc (British Telecommunications Group) is the largest integrated telecommunications operator in the UK, headquartered in London. BT's history dates back to 1846, when the first telecommunications company in the UK, the Electric Telegraph Company, was established. In 1984, BT separated from the UK Post Office and was privatized, becoming a pioneer in global telecommunications liberalization. BT's business covers fixed-line telephony, broadband, mobile communications, enterprise IT services, network security, and more, serving as a backbone operator for the UK's critical infrastructure.

BT sells cellular IoT connectivity on the EE mobile network, and enterprise IoT, security, and cloud services through BT Business. EE 5G network slicing can give industrial IoT and smart-city traffic its own quality target. The group also sells connectivity in more than 180 countries.

Development History and Milestones

The history of BT Group spans nearly 180 years. In 1846, the first telecommunications company was established in the UK, and in 1878, the British Post Office began operating telephone services. In 1912, the British telecom system was nationalized, and in 1984, British Telecom (BT) separated from the Post Office and was privatized and listed. In the 1990s, BT actively expanded its international business, acquiring multiple overseas telecom companies. In the 2000s, BT fell into a debt crisis due to over-expansion and sold part of its overseas assets. In 2016, BT acquired EE for £12.5 billion, gaining mobile network capability and becoming the UK's only fully converged telecom operator.

In terms of IoT and digital development: BT has long provided critical communication services to the UK government and enterprises; in 2019, EE launched 5G commercial services; in 2022, BT launched 5G network slicing services; BT Openreach is responsible for most of the UK's fixed-line infrastructure, with significant progress in full-fiber (FTTP) construction; BT Security provides cybersecurity services to enterprises and the government, supporting the secure deployment of critical IoT applications.
