SK Telecom IoT

South Korea's largest mobile operator, and the first to launch commercial 5G

Overview of SK Telecom

SK Telecom (SKT) is South Korea's largest mobile operator. In April 2019 it was the first operator to open a commercial 5G network. SKT is known for network technology and for putting AI into operator services.

For IoT, SKT connects devices over LoRa, LTE-M, NB-IoT, and 5G. Products such as T map and the NUGU assistant already use that connectivity. The AIX strategy treats AI and IoT as one line of development.

Development History and Milestones

SK Telecom was established in 1984, initially operating as Korea Mobile Telecom, and was renamed SK Telecom and integrated into the SK Group in 1994. In 1999, SKT was the first in the world to commercialize CDMA2000 1x EV-DO high-speed mobile data service, establishing its position as a technology leader. In 2011, SKT was the first in Korea to commercially launch an LTE network, once again leading the way.

Key milestones in the Internet of Things (IoT) field: In 2016, SKT built a nationwide LoRa LPWA network in Korea, becoming one of the first operators in the world to establish a national LoRa network; on April 3, 2019, SKT officially launched the world's first commercial 5G network service; in the same year, SKT applied Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) technology to 5G network security, becoming the world's first operator to commercialize quantum encryption for mobile networks; in 2021, SKT announced the spin-off of its semiconductor and ICT businesses to focus on core business areas such as AIoT (AI + IoT) and media.

ThingPlug

ThingPlug is SK Telecom's IoT open platform, built on the international standard oneM2M protocol, supporting full-process IoT services including device access, data collection, rule processing, and application development. The platform provides standardized APIs, allowing developers to quickly build IoT applications, and also supports data integration with third-party cloud platforms (such as AWS and Azure). ThingPlug has verified its stability and scalability in multiple fields, including smart cities, environmental monitoring, and industrial equipment management.
