Development History and Milestones
The history of KT Corporation (Korea Telecom) can be traced back to the Korea Telecom Authority, established in 1981, responsible for managing Korea's fixed-line and international communication infrastructure. It was restructured into a state-owned enterprise in 1991 and completed privatization in 2002, listed on the Korea Stock Exchange. As Korea's earliest fixed-line operator, KT owns a nationwide fiber backbone network and submarine cable assets, providing high-quality wired backbone support for its IoT data transmission.
In the progress of IoT development, KT launched the GiGA IoT Hub platform for enterprises in 2016, integrating various access technologies such as LoRa, LTE-M, and NB-IoT. It participated in Korea's first commercial 5G launch in 2019. In 2021, KT led and completed one of the world's largest AMI smart meter projects—upgrading network connectivity for over 22 million meters nationwide, becoming a benchmark case for KT in the utilities IoT field.
