T-Mobile IoT

The second-largest US wireless carrier, with wide 5G coverage

T-Mobile Overview

T-Mobile US is Deutsche Telekom's US company. After the 2020 merger with Sprint it became the second-largest wireless carrier in the United States. The Un-carrier approach dropped contracts and pushed 5G build-out.

On 5G, T-Mobile built the widest coverage in the US, using 600 MHz and the 2.5 GHz spectrum from Sprint for Sub-6 GHz. For IoT it sells connectivity to enterprises and developers on LTE-M and NB-IoT.

T-Mobile facts

  • Founded: 1994 as VoiceStream in the US; Deutsche Telekom was founded in 1996
  • Headquarters: Bellevue, Washington, United States
  • Users: More than 132 million (2025), second in US mobile
  • Network: 4G LTE, 5G NR (600 MHz, 2.5 GHz, and mmWave)
  • 5G coverage: More than 95% of the US population, one of the widest 5G networks
  • Parent: Deutsche Telekom AG holds about 48%
  • Listing: NASDAQ: TMUS

Development History and Milestones

T-Mobile US originated as VoiceStream Wireless founded in 1994, was acquired by Deutsche Telekom in 2001 for $35 billion and renamed T-Mobile USA. In 2012, after failing to merge with AT&T, T-Mobile launched the "Un-carrier" strategy, disrupting the market with initiatives such as eliminating contracts, offering unlimited data, and transparent pricing, directly competing with Verizon and AT&T, winning a large number of young users.

Key IoT Development Milestones: In 2017, T-Mobile became the first nationwide commercial NB-IoT network operator in the US, ahead of competitors; in 2020, completed the $26.2 billion merger with Sprint, becoming the second-largest mobile operator in the US, with significantly enhanced mid-band spectrum assets boosting IoT network capacity; in 2022, T-Mobile announced 5G coverage for over 320 million people nationwide, making it one of the most widely covered 5G networks in the world; in 2023, T-Mobile IoT connected devices exceeded 60 million, continuously increasing its share in the US IoT market.
