Development History and Milestones
Verizon Communications was established in 2000 through the merger of Bell Atlantic and GTE. The history of Bell Atlantic can be traced back to one of the "Baby Bells" split from AT&T in 1984, with its origins going back to Alexander Bell's founding of the telephone business, holding over 140 years of telecommunications service experience. In 2004, Verizon completed the acquisition of MCI, strengthening its enterprise network service capabilities. In 2014, it spent $130 billion to acquire full ownership of Verizon Wireless (formerly a joint venture with Vodafone), consolidating its position as the largest mobile operator in the U.S. In the 2020s, Verizon invested heavily in C-Band mid-band 5G, covering 200 million people across the U.S. by 2022; its Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) business grew rapidly, with FWA users exceeding 5.7 million by 2025, making it the largest FWA operator in the U.S.
In the development of IoT: in 2010, Verizon was the first to commercially deploy LTE networks in the U.S.; in 2015, it launched the ThingSpace IoT platform; in 2018, it commercially launched the world's first 5G fixed wireless broadband service (5G Home); in 2019, it introduced the first mobile 5G service; in 2022, Verizon announced that its C-Band mid-band 5G network covered 200 million people in the U.S., laying the network foundation for large-scale IoT deployment, with ThingSpace managing over 100 million connected devices.
