Development History and Milestones
The history of Telecom Italia dates back to the 19th century, when a state-owned telegraph and telephone system was established after Italy's unification. In 1994, the Italian government separated telecommunications from the STET Group, established Telecom Italia, and privatized it through listing. In 1997, Telecom Italia merged with Olivetti. In 2003, the mobile operations were unified under the TIM brand. In the 2010s, TIM faced debt pressures and market competition, undergoing multiple asset restructurings. In 2015, TIM acquired part of Brazil's Oi assets, strengthening TIM Brasil. In 2022, TIM spun off its fixed-line infrastructure into NetCo (a fiber network company), and in 2023 sold NetCo to investors including KKR, with TIM focusing on its service business.
In terms of IoT development: TIM has long provided key communication services to the Italian government and businesses; launched NB-IoT commercially in 2017; launched 5G commercial services in 2019; TIM Enterprise provides solutions such as TIM Smart City and TIM Industrial IoT; TIM cooperates with major Italian car companies, energy companies, and municipal departments to deploy IoT projects.
