Development History and Milestones
TPG was founded in 1986, initially as a computer wholesaler, and later transformed into an ISP. In 2008, it acquired Chariot, becoming the second-largest ISP in Australia. In 2017, TPG planned to build its own fourth mobile network, but the project was shelved after the Australian government banned Huawei 5G equipment in 2018, leading TPG to negotiate a merger with Vodafone Australia instead. In August 2018, the merger plan was announced. The ACCC attempted to block it, but the Federal Court approved it in February 2020. The merger was completed in July 2020, establishing TPG Telecom Limited. In 2024, TPG reached a regional MOCN agreement with Optus to share the 5G RAN and expand coverage in remote areas; the same year, it sold its enterprise/government/wholesale fixed-line business to Vocus.
