Development History and Milestones
Vivo's history can be traced back to the privatization of Brazilian telecommunications in 1998, when Telefonica acquired the São Paulo state telecom company Telesp. In 2010, Telefonica acquired all shares of Vivo Participações from Portugal Telecom, becoming the leader in the Brazilian telecom market. In 2011, it merged with Telesp to establish Telefônica Brasil S.A., and in 2012, launched the unified Vivo commercial brand.
In 2015, it acquired Global Village Telecom (GVT) to strengthen fixed networks outside São Paulo. In 2020, it participated in the Oi mobile assets auction and won the bid. In 2021, it won the Anatel 5G spectrum auction. In 2022, it completed the acquisition of Oi Mobile (about 12 million customers, 43 MHz of spectrum), with total connections breaking the 100 million mark, reaching a historic milestone.
