Overview
Home Assistant is a globally popular open-source smart home platform, led by Nabu Casa, supporting the access and integration of thousands of brand devices. Unlike commercial smart home solutions, Home Assistant emphasizes local-first, privacy-first : data is stored locally (Raspberry Pi, NAS, Docker, etc.), without relying on manufacturers' cloud, and devices can still be controlled when the network is down. It supports mainstream brands and protocols such as Xiaomi, Huawei, Tuya, Philips Hue, Sonoff, Zigbee, Z-Wave, and achieves unified management of multi-brand devices through integrations. It provides automation, scenes, dashboards, and mobile apps, making it the preferred platform for personal smart homes and DIY projects.
The connection between Home Assistant and IoT: devices connect through Wi-Fi, Zigbee, Z-Wave, Bluetooth, etc., with Home Assistant serving as the local hub for unified control. It can work with MQTT Brokers (like Mosquitto) to achieve more flexible device access and automation. For scenarios requiring remote access, the Nabu Casa cloud service or self-built reverse proxy can be used to achieve external network access while ensuring security.
Core Features
Multi-brand Integration
Official or community integrations for thousands of devices, protocols, and cloud platforms. Supports direct access via MQTT, HTTP, WebSocket, etc. Non-standard devices can be integrated customarily through MQTT or REST API. The number of integrations is continuously growing, covering mainstream smart home ecosystems.
Local-first and privacy
Data is stored locally, without going through a third-party cloud. Automation and scenarios run locally and are usable offline. Optional cloud backup and remote access (via Nabu Casa subscription or self-built) allow users to control the data flow themselves.
Automation and Extensions
Visual automation editor, scripts, YAML configuration. Supports flexible combinations of triggers, conditions, and actions. Rich add-on extension capabilities (such as Node-RED, Mosquitto, InfluxDB, Grafana). Can integrate with Node-RED to achieve complex workflow orchestration.
Typical IoT Applications
Personal smart home: Unified control of multi-brand devices, home/away scenarios, temperature and humidity-linked air conditioning. DIY projects: Self-developed sensors, ESP8266/ESP32 devices connected via MQTT. Multi-brand unified management: Breaking vendor ecosystem barriers to achieve cross-brand interconnection. Not directly related to SimtoLink IoT SIM cards, but smart home devices using cellular networking (such as 4G cameras, remote locks) can work with IoT SIM cards to enable connectivity in outdoor or no-Wi-Fi scenarios.
