Overview
Node-RED is an open-source, flow-based visual programming tool from IBM. It runs on Node.js and allows data flow processing through dragging nodes and connecting wires, without the need to write traditional code. It comes with built-in IoT nodes such as MQTT, HTTP, Modbus, WebSocket, and databases, enabling quick setup of device access, protocol conversion, rule logic, and data forwarding processes. It is integrated with platforms like EdgeX Foundry, Home Assistant, and Siemens, making it a popular choice for IoT edge and prototype development. Its lightweight design allows it to run on Raspberry Pi, edge gateways, and other resource-constrained environments.
How Node-RED fits with IoT: Device data is often generated in a "stream" format (MQTT messages, HTTP requests, serial data), and Node-RED's flow model naturally matches this; the rich community nodes cover mainstream protocols and cloud platforms; Function nodes support JavaScript for implementing complex logic. It is suitable for quickly validating ideas, building edge data processing pipelines, and integrating with Home Assistant for smart home automation.
Core Features
Visual Orchestration
Drag-and-drop flow design, with nodes representing input, processing, and output, and wires representing data flows. Supports debugging, breakpoints, and message viewing. Flows are stored as JSON, allowing version management, import, and export. Lowers development barriers, allowing business personnel to also participate in flow configuration.
Rich Nodes and Extensions
Built-in MQTT in/out, HTTP request, Modbus, Serial, WebSocket, Function, Switch, Change, etc. The community provides thousands of nodes, covering cloud platforms, databases, AI, and more. Custom node development is supported to meet specific needs.
Lightweight and integrated
Based on Node.js, with low resource usage, suitable for edge deployment. Home Assistant and EdgeX Foundry come with Node-RED as a flow orchestration component. It can work with Mosquitto, InfluxDB, Grafana, etc., to build a complete IoT data processing chain.
Typical IoT Applications
Edge protocol conversion: Modbus reading → JSON conversion → MQTT publishing. Smart home linkage: MQTT subscribes to sensors → condition judgment → actuator control. Industrial data acquisition: Serial/Modbus collection → data cleaning → HTTP reporting to the cloud. Prototype validation: Quickly set up a complete device-to-cloud link. In IoT solutions, Node-RED can serve as an edge-side data processing and rule orchestration tool, cooperating with IoT SIM cards and cloud platforms to achieve flexible data pipelines.
